Once regarded as one of the brightest young wingers in world football, Jadon Sancho’s time in the Premier League could be nearing its conclusion. Following his loan spell at Aston Villa during the 2025-26 season, ex-Villa defender Alan Hutton has explained to GOAL why the 26-year-old has failed to meet expectations and may need to rebuild his career away from England.
Sancho’s statistics: Challenging loan experiences at Chelsea and Aston Villa
Sancho made a bold decision in 2017 when he left Manchester City to join Borussia Dortmund, seeking regular first-team football. In Germany, he quickly flourished, scoring 50 goals in 137 matches for BVB and establishing himself as one of Europe’s most exciting prospects.
His performances earned him a senior call-up for England, making his debut in 2018. However, his international career has stalled at 23 caps due to inconsistent club form. Consequently, Sancho was never in contention for inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Sancho’s loan stint at Aston Villa failed to reignite the form that once made him a star. After winning the Conference League with Chelsea in 2025 and adding a Europa League medal to his collection, his impact at Villa Park was limited — he managed just one goal and three assists across 39 appearances.
Throughout the 2025-26 season, Sancho struggled to secure regular starts, as Unai Emery often preferred other options on the wings. It remains uncertain whether Villa will explore the possibility of making his move permanent.
Has the Premier League seen the last of Jadon Sancho?
Manchester United paid £73 million ($98m) for Sancho’s signature when he joined from Dortmund, but with only 12 goals for the Red Devils, his market value has significantly declined. The question now is whether the Premier League will see him again anytime soon.
When asked about Sancho’s future, former Villa defender Alan Hutton, speaking exclusively to GOAL through Uudet Kasinot, said: “Maybe. It’s a tough situation for him because I genuinely admire him as a player.”
Hutton added: “When he was at Dortmund, he was absolutely brilliant. He showcased his technical quality — great in one-on-one situations, always creating chances. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen that version of him recently.
“Maybe the big move to Manchester United didn’t go as planned, and his confidence took a hit. At Villa this season, there were glimpses of his potential, but perhaps the transfer fee, wages, and overall structure could deter clubs from taking a risk.
“A loan move to a European club might be his best option right now. It’s unfortunate that he hasn’t quite reached the heights he once promised.”
Transfer outlook: Will Aston Villa make a permanent move?
Unai Emery has remained tight-lipped about his plans for Sancho. Important decisions loom for both player and club ahead of the upcoming transfer window, with clarity expected soon.
When questioned about Sancho’s future, Villa’s Spanish manager commented: “We will reflect and analyse each situation carefully. We will make our decisions, but not yet. Our ambition is to keep improving, and every choice we make must help us progress next season. My only goal is to make the team better, and our decisions will align with that vision.”
Manchester United to activate contract clause and seek transfer fee
Sancho’s current contract at Old Trafford is set to expire soon, which would have made him a free agent. However, reports suggest that Manchester United plan to trigger a 12-month extension clause, allowing them to demand a transfer fee should he depart.
Whether Aston Villa have seen enough to justify making Sancho part of their plans for the 2026-27 season — particularly as they prepare for a return to the Champions League — remains uncertain. A potential third stint at Borussia Dortmund has also been hinted at, while other European clubs are reportedly monitoring his situation closely.
