Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of signing Atalanta midfielder Ederson, as head coach Michael Carrick seeks to strengthen his midfield options ahead of Casemiro’s expected departure at the end of June.

According to the Press Association, negotiations between the two clubs have advanced significantly, with a deal estimated to be worth up to £38 million believed to be close to completion.

United have acted swiftly following their third-place finish this season — a strong recovery after last year’s Europa League final defeat and a 15th-place league finish. Carrick’s contract extension was confirmed before the final match at Brighton, with the club simultaneously intensifying efforts to secure Ederson’s transfer.

If completed, Ederson would become the first signing under Carrick’s management. The club had also considered Aurelien Tchouameni, while Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson remains a player of interest, though reports suggest he prefers a move to Manchester City.

Financially, Manchester United reported an operating profit of £37.7 million for the first nine months of the 2026 fiscal year, a sharp turnaround from the £3.2 million loss recorded in the same period last year. The improvement was attributed to cost-cutting measures, including staff reductions and structural changes initiated after Sir Jim Ratcliffe became co-owner.

The club has raised its revenue forecast to £665 million and EBITDA to £210 million. Chief executive Omar Berrada credited the club’s on-field progress and organisational transformation, also noting milestones such as the women’s team reaching the Champions League quarter-finals, their first League Cup final appearance, participation in the World Sevens Series, and academy progress to both the FA Youth Cup and Premier League 2 play-off finals.

Meanwhile, plans to construct a new 100,000-seat stadium remain ongoing. The dismissal of former manager Ruben Amorim and his backroom staff reportedly cost around £16.7 million.
