Kalvin Phillips finds himself at a crucial juncture in his career following Pep Guardiola’s departure from Manchester City. After enduring a challenging period where the £45 million England international struggled for both playing time and form, a new chapter under Enzo Maresca at the Etihad Stadium might bring some optimism. However, a genuine chance for revival could lie away from Manchester.
The situation at Manchester City post-Guardiola
With Guardiola’s decade-long reign at City coming to an end, questions have immediately arisen regarding the future of fringe players within the squad. Although Enzo Maresca, Guardiola’s former assistant, is expected to take the reins, this managerial change may not necessarily secure the lifeline Phillips hopes for. Since joining from Leeds United in 2022, Phillips has struggled to settle, registering only 32 appearances across all competitions.
Despite his previous association with Maresca, Manchester City are reportedly assessing transfer options to bolster their midfield. As they look to reclaim the Premier League title and strengthen their European campaign, the club seems more inclined to offload Phillips rather than reintegrate him into a system that has evolved significantly. With two years still remaining on his substantial contract, all parties will be eager to find a resolution soon.
Sheffield United emerge as frontrunners
According to reports from The Star, Sheffield United are closely monitoring the developments surrounding Phillips. The Blades are reportedly eager to bring him back to Bramall Lane, despite his previous injury-hit loan spell in the latter half of last season. Manager Chris Wilder has long admired the 30-year-old midfielder and values his leadership and professionalism, qualities that impressed during his short stint in South Yorkshire.
The club’s pursuit of Phillips has already had tangible effects on their squad planning. It is understood that their strong desire to re-sign the former Leeds United player contributed significantly to the decision to part ways with Jairo Riedewald. The Dutch midfielder was reportedly taken aback by the club’s sudden change of stance after being led to believe that his one-year contract extension would be activated — underlining how highly Wilder and his staff regard Phillips.
Financial challenges of the transfer
Although some discussions have hinted at a permanent deal, Sheffield United are expected to push for another loan arrangement. The biggest obstacle remains Phillips’ salary, which far exceeds the club’s usual wage structure. Nevertheless, City have previously been willing to subsidise his wages to facilitate regular first-team football — a possibility that could be revisited this summer.
Wilder remains extremely positive about Phillips’ qualities and the influence he can have in the dressing room. Speaking about the potential of a return, the Sheffield United boss made his interest clear.
“He’ll have plenty of clubs interested in him,” Wilder stated. “We’ve brought in a really good professional. He was unfortunate with his injury and didn’t play as much as he wanted. I told him we’d love to be an option for him, his agent, and his parent club if the opportunity arises.”
Wilder’s strong endorsement
Although Phillips only managed three appearances before an injury in the Steel City derby curtailed his season, Wilder believes his presence is invaluable. The manager is determined to assemble a squad full of experienced, influential figures — attributes he believes the England international embodies.
Wilder added: “He certainly fits the bill in terms of his personality and attributes, both on and off the pitch. If the opportunity comes up, we’ll definitely look to pursue it.”
