Scott McTominay could be on his way back to Manchester United for a “big transfer fee”, according to Robert Snodgrass. The Scotland international has impressed over two successful seasons with Napoli, where he has transformed from a box-to-box midfielder into a goal-scoring No.10. His recent form might make him an attractive option for United, especially as a potential replacement for Joshua Zirkzee.

McTominay’s rise in Italy has been remarkable. The former Manchester United academy graduate became a Serie A title winner and was named the division’s MVP for the 2024-25 campaign. His evolution in Naples has seen him post his best-ever goal tallies, improving from 13 to 14 goals across consecutive seasons. The 29-year-old is also expected to play a key role for Scotland at the 2026 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee could be on the move during the summer of 2026. After joining Manchester United from Bologna in 2024 for £36.5 million ($49m), he has struggled to make a lasting impact in English football, managing just nine goals in 75 appearances. With United keen to inject more attacking spark into Michael Carrick’s side as they prepare for a Premier League title push in 2026-27, a reshuffle in the attacking department could be on the cards.

Speaking about McTominay’s prospects, former Scotland international Robert Snodgrass, in an interview with Booker, told GOAL: “If he performs well on the World Cup stage, it’ll make clubs more comfortable spending big money on him, because there will definitely be a big transfer fee involved.”

Snodgrass further suggested that a return to Old Trafford could make sense: “When you think about it, having that time away from Manchester United might actually have benefited him. Bringing him back could be a smart move, especially when the club is looking at players like Joshua Zirkzee for those attacking roles.”

He added: “Scott knows the club inside out. He’s matured during his time away, developed a winning mentality, and now believes he deserves to be one of the key figures. That kind of mindset is exactly what United need, and he has it.”

McTominay, who made 255 appearances for Manchester United before leaving, was primarily used as a holding midfielder at Old Trafford. However, his full potential has been unlocked in Italy, where he operates further up the pitch. Discussing his best position, Snodgrass explained: “For me, Scott is an 8 and a 10. I prefer him in an advanced role because of his ability to make runs beyond the defence — which is crucial for a number 8.”

He continued: “You could argue that the roles of an 8 and a 10 overlap, though the 10 doesn’t need to track back as much. Scott has the qualities to play both. He can operate as a 10 and contribute goals. One of his biggest strengths is getting into the box and attacking the ball in dangerous areas. That’s something he does exceptionally well.”

Snodgrass also highlighted McTominay’s versatility, recalling his early days with Scotland: “He even played as a centre-back for Scotland when he first broke into the team. That taught him how vital he is to any side he’s part of. He’s got a fantastic attitude, and this summer is a great opportunity for him to show his progress.”

As for whether Manchester United might make a move, McTominay remains under contract with Napoli until 2028. The Italian club, who paid £26 million ($35m) to sign him from Manchester, are under no pressure to sell. However, reports indicate that they would only consider negotiations if an offer of around £65 million ($87m) is made. United could be tempted to explore that possibility, offering McTominay the chance to return to what many see as his spiritual home.

The interview with Robert Snodgrass was conducted on behalf of Booker, as part of the UK wholesaler’s initiative encouraging Scotland fans to support local businesses during the Summer of Sport.
