Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has expressed that guiding Portugal to victory at the 2026 World Cup would be a poetic and fitting conclusion to Cristiano Ronaldo’s illustrious career. The versatile right-back noted that the global football community, not just Portuguese supporters, would be rallying behind the veteran forward as he seeks to cap his international journey with the ultimate prize.

Preserving legacy without pressure

Dalot voiced his confidence in teammate Ronaldo achieving a fairytale ending on football’s grandest stage. The Manchester United full-back has been included in Roberto Martinez’s provisional 27-man training squad, which currently features an additional goalkeeper, Genclerbirligi’s Ricardo Velho. This extended list will be reduced to the final 26-man roster before the official FIFA submission deadline on June 2.

Global football united in support

In a candid conversation with CazéTV, Dalot reflected on the emotional and symbolic significance surrounding the legendary striker. “I think it’s not just a Portuguese unity; it’s also a global unity, a unity of football,” Dalot commented.

“Considering everything Cristiano has done, not only for Portugal but for the sport as a whole, it would be wonderful for him to conclude his football career with a World Cup title. If you ask me whether he needs a World Cup to be regarded as one of the greatest of all time, I’d say no. But it would definitely add even more beauty to his career and serve as a remarkable trophy for him, without question.

“I truly hope that happens because, apart from wanting him to win as his admirer and as a football fan, I also know that for my country, it would be an incredibly significant achievement. Being part of that would be an unforgettable experience.”

Final chapter for football’s icons

The upcoming tournament represents the end of an era, as both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi prepare for what is likely their last World Cup appearance. While Messi has already lifted the trophy with Argentina in Qatar four years ago, the 41-year-old Portuguese legend remains fiercely determined to capture the one major honour missing from his glittering résumé. Ronaldo enters the competition as the all-time leader in both international appearances and goals, boasting an extraordinary record of 143 goals in 226 matches for Portugal.

Training preparations in Miami

Portugal will commence their pre-tournament training camp on June 1, featuring warm-up matches against Chile and Nigeria before heading to their base in Miami. Roberto Martinez’s men face a challenging opening fixture against DR Congo on June 17. Subsequent group stage clashes with Uzbekistan and Colombia will test the depth and tactical adaptability of the talented Selecao squad as they aim to progress confidently into the knockout rounds.
