PADANG – Semen Padang FC legend Suhatman Imam has predicted four strong teams that he believes will advance to the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup — Spain, Japan, Argentina, and France.

Speaking at his residence in Parak Karakah, Padang City, Suhatman said that these four nations are among the strongest contenders to make it all the way to the final.

He noted that all four teams have shown consistent performances in previous World Cup tournaments. Even during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, their form has been impressive.

“My prediction is based on the fact that these four teams have performed well, which we could already see during the qualifying stages,” he said on Friday (29 May 2026).

He further explained that Japan has built a good track record through their friendly matches against top teams like Brazil, Germany, and England.

In terms of tactics, Japan has adopted a modern footballing approach. According to Suhatman, their combination of speed, power, agility, and skill makes them a well-rounded side.

“In addition, Japan never gives up. Their fighting spirit is excellent,” he added.

As for Spain, Suhatman highlighted that the team has maintained a strong track record both in the qualifying rounds and during the 2022 World Cup.

He pointed out that Spain’s squad boasts a balanced mix of young and experienced players.

“This combination of youth and experience allows them to complement each other’s weaknesses,” he remarked.

He also mentioned that France and Argentina have both displayed great form and consistency in recent years.

According to him, these two nations’ experience in facing each other in the 2022 World Cup final gives them additional confidence heading into 2026.

“Both teams are excellent — they reached the final last time. Their confidence will surely grow, supported by talented players and strong strategies,” he explained.

Backing Spain

The former senior player of Semen Padang FC also revealed that his personal favourite for the 2026 World Cup title is Spain.

He made this statement during an interview at his home in Parak Karakah, Padang City, on Friday (29 May 2026).

The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to kick off in June, with the opening match featuring Mexico versus South Africa in Group A on Friday (12 June 2026) at 23:00 WIB.

This edition of the tournament will feature 48 participating nations and will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Suhatman stated that he supports Spain because of their strong record and extensive experience in both club and international competitions.

“If I have to pick one team to support, it would be Spain. They are highly experienced in both club football and international tournaments,” he said.

He added that Spain’s roster is well-balanced, combining youthful energy with veteran experience.

“Their qualifying record has been impressive, and the mix between young and senior players ensures balance within the team,” he said.

According to Suhatman, physical endurance plays a crucial role in the World Cup, as the tournament lasts for a full month and involves 48 competing nations.

“That’s why the combination of young and senior players is important. If you rely solely on senior players, injuries become a risk, but with younger players, that can be offset,” he explained.

Despite his admiration for Spain, Suhatman clarified that he is not a fanatical supporter of any particular national team.

In previous tournaments, he had supported various nations, including Brazil, France, and Argentina.

“I don’t stick to one team. I look at their track record each time, and for this World Cup, I’m backing Spain,” he concluded.
