Guti has suggested that a “serious and major” issue within the Real Madrid dressing room was the real reason behind Xabi Alonso’s unexpected sacking. The former midfielder also took aim at the current squad, arguing that the team lacks balance, identity, and collective cohesion.
Guti questions the abrupt end to Alonso’s Real Madrid tenure
Xabi Alonso’s stint as Real Madrid manager ended abruptly in January, just a few months after his appointment. The decision came as a shock to many, as Alonso was seen as a key figure in the club’s long-term rebuilding plans at the Santiago Bernabeu. According to former Madrid midfielder Guti, the dismissal was not purely based on results but something deeper within the club’s inner workings.
Guti hints at unrest inside the dressing room
Speaking on the ‘Bajo los palos’ show alongside Iker Casillas, Guti claimed that the speed of the club’s decision suggested serious internal issues. Having spent 15 years in Madrid’s first team after coming through La Fabrica, Guti stated that president Florentino Perez would not typically end a major project so suddenly unless something significant had occurred behind closed doors.
“Something very serious must have happened for Alonso to leave that way,” Guti explained. “Xabi was not a manager meant for just five months or a year. He was part of a long-term vision. Knowing Florentino, he wouldn’t take such a step unless something serious and major took place. I believe something unusual happened in the dressing room for things to end like this.”
Concerns rise about Real Madrid’s overall direction
Despite Real Madrid still boasting world-class attacking talent, Guti believes the team has become overly reliant on individual brilliance rather than a unified system. He also indicated that the changing composition of the squad has eroded the sense of unity that was once a hallmark of the club.
“What doesn’t the team lack? It’s missing so many things,” he added. “Defensively, they concede far too many goals. Offensively, nearly all their attacking play depends on Vinicius Junior or Kylian Mbappe. Collectively, the team is falling short. When we had more homegrown players, the group felt stronger. With players coming from all over the world, it’s harder to maintain that unity. It used to be easier before.”
Madrid under increasing pressure to rebuild
Real Madrid now face significant pressure to regain stability following a trophyless season. Questions continue to surface about the atmosphere in the dressing room, along with concerns over the team’s defensive solidity and tactical balance. The club’s upcoming steps will be closely observed, especially as Los Blancos need to appoint a permanent head coach after Alvaro Arbeloa’s departure. Additionally, Real Madrid are preparing for their next major event — the presidential election scheduled for June 7th.
