Singapore. Indian player PV Sindhu could not show the consistency required to maintain constant pressure in front of world number one Ann Se Young and her campaign ended after losing in the quarter-finals of the Singapore Open Super 750 badminton tournament on Friday, but the legendary men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won a tough match and made it to the semi-finals. Korean player Ann Se Young maintained her dominance over Sindhu by winning the match 21-17, 21-14.
Two-time Olympic medalist Sindhu showed glimpses of her aggressive game at times and was able to put pressure on the Korean in some stages, but in the crucial moments, Ann Se Young’s better control, excellent movement and ability to capitalize on crucial points prevailed. With this defeat, Sindhu’s losing streak against the reigning Olympic champion has reached nine matches.
In these matches, Indian players have been able to win the game only once, which was possible in the 2023 Badminton Asia Championship. Even before the match, this challenge was considered very difficult for Sindhu, because this year Ann Se Young has lost only one match, whereas in the entire year in 2025, she has suffered only four defeats. This shows his extraordinary dominance on the international circuit. Asian Games champions and fourth seeds Satwik and Chirag made a comeback from one game down to defeat Malaysia’s Khai Shing Kang and Aaron Tai 19-21, 21-17, 21-13 in a tough match that lasted one hour and five minutes.
The Indian pair will now face top seeds Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae of Korea, who defeated seventh seeds Japanese pair of Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi 21-19, 21-18. Earlier, Sindhu adopted an aggressive stance from the beginning and tried to control the rallies through her powerful smashes and quick interceptions.
However, she trailed 7-11 at the break of the first game. After the break, with the help of continuous aggressive returns and shots, he made a comeback and took the score to 13-14. Sindhu’s aggressive strategy was keeping her in the match, while on the other hand, Ann’s control at the net and ability to withstand pressure was giving her the lead again.
Sindhu reduced the gap to 16-18 with the help of powerful smashes and some amazing shots on the opponent’s body and then won the longest rally of the match to take the score to 17-19. When Sindhu’s shot went out of the court, Ann Se Young got three game points which she easily cashed in. The Indian player had a very bad start in the second game. N wasted no time and took a 6-0 lead. However, Sindhu made a good comeback after this and took the score to 6-8 but Ann took the lead by four points by making the score 11-7 at the break.
Sidhu tried to adopt an aggressive stance after the break and reduced the score to 11-14 and then won a long rally of 30 shots to 12-14. Making some mistakes at crucial moments proved costly for the Indian player, taking advantage of which Ain took a huge lead of 18-13. The Korean player troubled Sindhu with consistent excellent placement and secured seven match points. As soon as Sindhu went out of the shot court, she capitalized on the second match point and entered the semi-finals, winning the match that lasted 48 minutes.
