Jordan’s 2026 World Cup Squad: Jamal Sellami Announces Line-up for March International Matches

Jordan’s squad for the 2026 World Cup will mark the nation’s first appearance at the tournament, making them one of four debutants at the global event.

The Jordan national team will be among four newcomers competing across North America this summer. Their qualification for the 2026 World Cup came after finishing just one point ahead of Iran in the AFC qualifiers. This success also propelled them to their highest FIFA World Ranking in over ten years. However, despite that achievement, Jordan will be fielding one of the least experienced squads at this level of international football.

Drawn into Group J, Jordan will face Austria and Algeria, as well as reigning world champions Argentina — one of the tournament favourites once again.

Following a poor run of results in October and November, where they lost three consecutive games, Jordan bounced back impressively by winning five straight matches in December’s FIFA Arab Cup, conceding only two goals in that stretch.

They eventually lost 3-2 to Morocco in the final after extra time and wrapped up their World Cup preparations with a 2-2 draw against Costa Rica in Turkiye at the end of March.

Jordan’s progress towards this World Cup has been steady. Prior to their Arab Cup final appearance, they also reached the Asian Cup final, where they were defeated by hosts Qatar. On their way to that final, they recorded victories over Malaysia, Iraq, South Korea, and Tajikistan.

In the AFC qualifiers, Jordan topped their initial group ahead of Saudi Arabia and later finished second behind South Korea in the next stage to clinch their World Cup berth.

Jordan are placed in Group J for the World Cup 2026.

Head coach Jamal Sellami, who guided them to this milestone, was in an interesting position during the Arab Cup final in December — being a former Moroccan international who spent most of his playing career in Casablanca.

The 55-year-old ex-midfielder, who scored twice for Morocco, has become the first manager to lead Jordan to a World Cup finals, achieving this feat in his first job outside Moroccan football.

Appointed as Hussein Ammouta’s successor, Sellami has accomplished more than any of his predecessors, guiding Jordan to both the Arab Cup final and their first-ever World Cup qualification.

For Jordan to make an impression in their debut World Cup campaign, national captain and Rennes winger Musa Al-Taamari will be a central figure. Although he did not participate in the Arab Cup, his leadership and attacking flair will be vital for the team’s success this summer.

Al-Taamari, who is just ten goals shy of Hamza Al-Dardour’s all-time national scoring record, began his European journey eight years ago with APOEL in Cyprus and later played in Belgium before moving to France, where he featured for Montpellier and Rennes in Ligue 1.
