Spurred on by an enthusiastic home crowd, Deportivo Toluca emerged victorious over Tigres UANL in an all-Mexican Concacaf Champions Cup final, clinching the title after a tense penalty shootout.

Scorers: Díaz 103' ; Henrique 113'

Penalties: 6 - 5

The opening half was a cautious affair, with neither side managing to break the deadlock. Both Liga MX teams shared possession evenly and registered two shots on target each before heading into the break goalless.

In an unfortunate twist, Marcelo Flores had to leave the field injured in the 78th minute, just a day after being selected for Canada’s World Cup squad.

Veteran Tigres striker André-Pierre Gignac came on in place of Flores and almost made an immediate impact, forcing Toluca goalkeeper Luis García into a brilliant reflex save with his very first touch.

With no goals through regulation time, the match moved into extra time.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Toluca’s Jorge Díaz unleashed a powerful low shot across the face of goal into the bottom-left corner, finally giving his side the breakthrough.

But the drama continued as Tigres’ Joaquim Henrique levelled things up just ten minutes later with a spectacular leaping header, sending the contest to a penalty shootout.

The shootout mirrored the intensity of the match, remaining close until Toluca sealed a 6-5 victory from the spot.

This triumph marks Toluca’s third Concacaf Champions Cup title and their first since 2003.

For Tigres, it was heartbreak in the end, as they finished runners-up in a final that truly could have gone either way.
