Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title, edging past Arsenal in the 2026 final through a dramatic penalty shootout after the match ended level following extra time in Budapest.
The game burst into life early on when Kai Havertz put Arsenal ahead inside five minutes. The German forward surged forward on the counter before firing a powerful shot into the top corner, leaving the PSG goalkeeper with no chance.
Despite conceding early, PSG began to dictate play and dominated possession, but Arsenal’s well-organised defence proved difficult to penetrate for the remainder of the first half.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with PSG continuing to press high and control possession. Their persistence finally paid off when Cristhian Mosquera fouled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the box. Ousmane Dembélé stepped up confidently to convert the resulting penalty, levelling the score at 1-1.
Both sides created half-chances during extra time, but neither could find the decisive goal, sending the final into a penalty shootout — the first in a Champions League final in ten years.
In the tense shootout that followed, Eberechi Eze, Nuno Mendes, and Gabriel failed to convert their spot kicks. PSG held their nerve under pressure to seal the win and capture their second consecutive Champions League crown.
It was a momentous night for the French champions, marking another milestone in their European journey as they retained the most prestigious club trophy in continental football.
