With Ruben Amorim having moved away from using traditional left wingers, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has been forced to improvise in that position.
To fill the void, Carrick turned to support striker Matheus Cunha and left wing-back Patrick Dorgu on the left flank, both of whom delivered impressive performances when called upon.
Such was their impact that the club is reportedly considering converting Dorgu into a permanent winger, while INEOS are contemplating whether to leave the position unaddressed during the upcoming transfer window.
Alongside the need for a backup striker to support Benjamin Sesko, United’s co-owners appear to be on the lookout for a versatile forward who can operate across multiple attacking roles.
In the midst of this, AC Milan’s star Rafael Leao has publicly confirmed his intention to leave San Siro after seven years at the club.
The Portuguese international is predominantly a left-winger but is equally effective through the middle. The 26-year-old recorded 10 goals and three assists last season, demonstrating his consistency and attacking prowess.
Leao has previously spoken about his admiration for the 20-time English league champions, and according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he is now eager to make the switch to the Premier League next season.
Despite interest from clubs in Turkiye, the dynamic forward has set his sights firmly on Manchester United. Reports suggest that INEOS are aware of his desire to join and hold a positive view of the player as well.
No formal discussions have taken place thus far, although Barcelona are said to be monitoring the situation closely.
According to sources close to the player, “Leao will not be satisfied with just a change of scenery. He has made his goal clear: when the time is right, he will evaluate opportunities to continue his career and compete at the top level of European football.”
The report further adds, “He is not seeking the financial allure of the Arab world or Turkey, even though the Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe rivalry could have tempted him. Instead, his focus is on the Premier League, and particularly on Manchester United.”
Leao was also quoted saying, “I often watch the Premier League. I like Manchester United, especially because of Cristiano Ronaldo, who is my idol, though I also follow Arsenal on TV.”
Given recent reports from England, Manchester United are believed to be open to the idea of bringing him in, while Barcelona’s interest remains a distant possibility at this stage.
United could certainly benefit from a player of Leao’s calibre — his explosive pace, technical ability, and versatility would fit seamlessly into Carrick’s system and provide a major boost to their attacking options.
The forward is reportedly valued between £34 million and £52 million. Whether INEOS decide to allocate funds for his transfer, especially amid their plans to strengthen the midfield, remains to be seen.
