TRIBUNNEWS.COM - Australia has officially announced a 26-player squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they are placed in Group D alongside hosts the United States.
Goalkeeper and captain Mathew Ryan, along with veteran winger Mathew Leckie, headline the squad as both are set to appear in their fourth World Cup — a remarkable achievement in their international careers.
This milestone places Ryan and Leckie alongside Australian legends Tim Cahill and Mark Milligan, who also represented the Socceroos in four World Cup editions.
Both Ryan and Leckie have already accumulated 10 World Cup finals appearances each, the highest in Australia’s football history.
In addition to the experienced pair, head coach Tony Popovic has included several young players who will make their World Cup debut on football’s biggest stage.
Names such as Alessandro Circati, Jordy Bos, Nestory Irankunda, and Mohamed Toure represent a new generation expected to lead Australia’s future ambitions on the global stage.
However, the announcement came with disappointment for Martin Boyle.
The Hibernian forward was left out of the final squad despite being fully fit.
Boyle had an unfortunate experience during the 2022 World Cup when he was forced to withdraw just days before kick-off due to an ACL injury. Despite that, he remained with the team to help maintain morale in the dressing room.
Alongside Boyle, Kye Rowles, Joe Gauci, and Brandon Borrello also missed the final cut.
Australia’s 2026 squad features a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talents.
Besides Ryan and Leckie, experienced players like Aziz Behich and Jackson Irvine will be making their third World Cup appearances.
Meanwhile, 17 players will experience the World Cup atmosphere for the first time, with 14 of them having fewer than 15 international caps.
Interestingly, Cristian Volpato and Tete Yengi have been selected despite not yet making their senior debuts for the Socceroos.
Australia are drawn in Group D with Turkey, the United States, and Paraguay.
Head coach Tony Popovic admitted that finalizing the squad was a difficult process, acknowledging that several players who contributed during qualification were left out.
“Some tough decisions had to be made. That’s the nature of major tournaments. I also want to pay tribute to the players who helped us qualify but didn’t make the final squad this time,” Popovic said, as quoted by ESPN.

Controversies Surrounding the 2026 World Cup
Australia’s placement in Group D cannot be separated from the fact that the United States is one of the hosts of the 2026 World Cup.
Several controversies have emerged in the United States ahead of the long-awaited tournament.
One major issue concerns visa policies that could potentially affect certain participating nations.
Additionally, political tensions between Iran and the United States have drawn attention in the lead-up to the event.
Analysts believe these factors could influence fan attendance and the overall atmosphere of the tournament in the U.S.
Adding to the challenge, ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup in the United States have risen sharply.
For instance, tickets for the opening match between the United States and Paraguay in Inglewood, California, on June 13 are currently priced at up to $4,105 (around ₹70 lakh) for front-row Category 1 seats, according to ESPN.
This marks a significant increase compared to previous pricing, where the highest Category 1 tickets were listed at $2,735 (around ₹46.7 lakh).
These World Cup 2026 controversies were also discussed by Adrian from Spieltag Indonesia during a live podcast with Tribunnews.
“It’s already a drama, both on and off the pitch,” said Adrian from Spieltag Indonesia.
“The United States has many strict regulations, especially regarding visas. On top of that, World Cup 2026 tickets are more expensive than in previous editions.”
“This situation is already controversial even before the tournament begins.”
“Fortunately, similar issues are not occurring in Canada and Mexico.”
“There is also attention on Iranian players who will be competing in the U.S.,” he added.
