LPG New Rules: Major Changes to Cooking Gas Regulations Starting Today, June 1—Only One Connection Allowed Per Household..

If your household currently possesses both Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder, the dynamics of your kitchen are set to change starting June 1st. Comprehensive revisions are being implemented across various regulations—ranging from gas subsidies and cylinder refilling procedures to the issuance of new connections. The most significant change is that, henceforth, only one type of gas connection will be deemed valid at a single address. Households where an active PNG line is operational will no longer be able to book LPG cylinders, even if they wish to do so. Furthermore, changes have also been introduced regarding the mandatory time interval between the refilling of two cylinders. The government's primary objective is to curb the black marketing of gas.

**If You Have PNG, Your LPG Connection Will Be Discontinued**

Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have fully integrated their digital databases. This integration has made it significantly easier to track which households are utilizing both PNG and LPG connections at the same address. Under the new regulations, such customers will now be required to surrender their LPG connections. The system has been updated in such a manner that if an active PNG connection is detected at a specific residence, the facility to book LPG cylinder refills for that address will be automatically blocked. Failure to comply with these regulations could result in the company suspending or permanently cancelling your LPG connection.

**Special Facility for Those Who Surrender Connections**

The prospect of surrendering their gas cylinders often causes anxiety among many customers regarding their future needs. A highly practical solution has been devised to address this concern. Any customer who chooses to terminate their old LPG connection after switching to PNG will be issued a 'Transfer Voucher' by their respective gas agency. The primary benefit of this voucher is that should you relocate in the future—whether due to employment or other reasons—to an area where PNG facilities are unavailable, you can utilize this very voucher to seamlessly reactivate your LPG connection without any hassle.

**New Time Limits Established for Refill Bookings**

A new regulation has also been implemented regarding the frequency of gas bookings. It is now mandatory to maintain a specific, predetermined time gap between the booking of two consecutive cylinders. Customers in urban areas will have to wait at least 25 days to book a new cylinder. For rural areas, this waiting period has been set at 45 days. However, the silver lining is that there has been no reduction in the annual quota of 12 subsidized cylinders. Additionally, changes have been implemented regarding the various charges associated with obtaining a new connection—ranging from the security deposit and regulator charges to the installation fees.

**A New Masterplan to Curb Black Marketing**
A clear strategy underpins all these stringent measures. In fact, complaints had been received from various locations regarding the commercial misuse of subsidized domestic cylinders. Empty cylinders kept in households already connected to PNG (Piped Natural Gas) could potentially serve as conduits for the black marketing of gas. This digital integration is expected to bring greater transparency to the system. Furthermore, the deadline for the ongoing ‘National PNG Drive 2.0’ campaign—aimed at raising awareness about piped gas across the country—has been extended until June 30.
