JEE Advanced 2026: Passed JEE Advanced but scored low marks in Class 12? Don't stress—even then..
Indiaemploymentnews | June 1, 2026 4:39 PM CST

Following the release of the JEE Advanced 2026 results, thousands of students are facing a new cause for concern. Many candidates have successfully qualified for the JEE Advanced examination; however, they are anxious about their eligibility status due to the ongoing controversy surrounding CBSE's On-Screen Marking (OSM) system and having secured lower-than-expected marks in their Class 12 board examinations. Amidst this situation, IIT Roorkee—the organizing institute for JEE Advanced 2026—has issued an important message for the students. The institute has clearly stated that candidates who have qualified for JEE Advanced 2026 should proceed to register for JoSAA 2026 counseling without worrying about their Class 12 marks or percentages.

IIT Roorkee: What did the Institute Say?
A press release issued by IIT Roorkee states that all successful candidates should participate in the counseling process conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) for 2026, regardless of the marks or percentages they secured in their Class 12 board examinations. The institute has appealed to students not to opt out of the counseling process and to ensure they complete their registration on time. This message comes at a juncture when persistent questions are being raised regarding the CBSE Class 12 results and the OSM evaluation system.

Will Students with Low Marks Secure a Seat?
Although IIT Roorkee has advised all qualified students to register for counseling, a crucial condition has been attached to this recommendation. The institute has clarified that final admission and seat confirmation will be granted only if the candidate fulfills the eligibility criteria related to Class 12—along with other conditions—as stipulated in the JEE Advanced 2026 Information Brochure. In other words, while a student may participate in JoSAA counseling and may even be allotted a seat, their admission will not be finally approved if they fail to meet the requisite Class 12 percentage requirements or other eligibility conditions.

Why is this Announcement Significant? This year, a large number of students have registered objections regarding CBSE's new on-screen marking system. Many students claim that they received significantly lower marks than they had expected. A substantial number of students have requested scanned copies of their answer sheets, and the re-evaluation process is currently underway. Consequently, many students preparing for admission into engineering programs had assumed that they would be unable to participate in the JoSAA counseling due to their low Class 12 scores. The recent announcement by IIT Roorkee has provided immediate relief to such students, as they will now, at the very least, be able to participate in the counseling process.

Who Topped JEE Advanced 2026?

This year, Shubham Kumar from the IIT Delhi zone has secured the All India Rank 1 in JEE Advanced 2026. He scored 330 out of 360 marks, marking the highest score achieved this year. Among female candidates, Aarohi Deshpande—also from the IIT Delhi zone—emerged as the topper. She obtained 280 out of 360 marks and secured the 77th rank in the Common Rank List (CRL).

What is the Advice for Students?
Experts advise that students who have qualified for JEE Advanced need not panic regarding their Class 12 marks. If they have not yet applied for JoSAA counseling, they should ensure they complete their registration within the stipulated time. On the other hand, students who have objections regarding their board results can also avail themselves of CBSE's re-evaluation and marks verification processes. For the time being, IIT Roorkee's message is clear: all students who have qualified for JEE Advanced should participate in the JoSAA counseling, as the final determination of eligibility will be made at a later stage.
