Iran President Resignation: Iranian officials have rejected reports that Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian has sought to step down in protest over the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) unfettered influence over wartime decision-making in Tehran. The response came after UK-based Iran International reported that Pejeshkian had submitted his resignation to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, saying that the elected government has been de facto excluded from vital decision-making processes in the country and that the vacuum created by this situation has helped hardline factions within the IRGC take control of affairs.

What is the truth?

Citing an informed government source, the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency reported that the President has not resigned and is carrying out his duties. Separately, Seyed Mehdi Tabatabai, deputy head of communications and information at the President’s Office, also rejected Iran International’s report in a post on X and said Pezeshkian would not shy away from serving the people. Tabatabai’s post read, “The spreading of rumors by infamous foreign networks is the result of the previous useless media game. They have published their fabrications instead of the reality.”

It added, “President Pezeshkian will not turn away from serving the people, just as the Iranian nation will not turn back from the path of solidarity and protest. He will take to the grave his desire to break the unity of the Iranian nation.”

What does the report say?

Iran International, citing sources, claimed that Pezeshkian has submitted an official letter of resignation to the office of the Supreme Leader in which he has claimed that due to IRGC’s influence in taking decisions, he is unable to run the government and fulfill his legal responsibilities and that is why he is requesting to step down immediately.

This added to months-old reports claiming tensions between the government and the Islamic Republic’s military-security institutions. Earlier, a New York Times report claimed that a small, elite group of people in senior positions, most of whom are current or former senior IRGC commanders, are guiding decision-making in Iran.

“Senior Iranian officials say all important matters are handled by the 56-year-old heir apparent. However, decision-making is not limited to just one man,” the report said, adding that it was “a tight-knit group of brothers” whose “most significant experience was the brutal eight-year war between Iran and Iraq that began in 1980.”
