Declan Rice and Noni Madueke have delivered a strong rebuttal to their critics on social media following an emotional weekend that saw Arsenal celebrate their Premier League title while suffering heartbreak in the Champions League final. The Arsenal duo responded sharply after Tottenham defender Djed Spence attempted to mock their loss to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.
Madueke responds after Budapest disappointment
The 24-year-old winger took to social media to respond to criticism after a weekend of contrasting emotions for Mikel Arteta’s men. As Arsenal paraded the Premier League trophy through the streets of north London, celebrating their first domestic title in 22 years, the sting of their Champions League final defeat still lingered. The Gunners were beaten on penalties by Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest, with Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes missing key spot-kicks.
Madueke, who came on as a second-half substitute but did not take a penalty, used his social media platform to clarify his stance. Sharing a picture of himself and Declan Rice holding the Premier League trophy, he wrote: “Champions! Whilst others are tweeting and posting. Thank you God. The glory is yours!” His post served as a pointed response to those questioning both his contribution and the team’s achievements.
Rice mocks ‘jealous’ rivals during title parade
Rice joined in soon after, adding to the conversation as Arsenal’s squad celebrated their league triumph. The former West Ham United captain, who successfully converted his penalty in the Champions League final, commented: “Jealousy everywhere,” followed by laughing emojis—an unmistakable message to rival fans and players.
The England international also addressed supporters during the title parade, using the platform to send a defiant message to the rest of the Premier League. “They laughed. They are not laughing anymore,” Rice told the fans. “I love this team, I love this manager. To see the joy we can give people is unbelievable. But next year we are coming back for more. Lock in or get locked out.”
Spence reignites the north London rivalry
The tension traces back to a long-standing rivalry with Tottenham’s Djed Spence. Throughout the season, Spence regularly mocked Arsenal, even sharing edited images of Gunners players behind bars during pre-season. After Arsenal’s win in the north London derby in February, the club’s official account trolled Spence by posting a clip of him losing possession with the caption “Locked up.”
Spence found his opportunity for payback after PSG’s victory on Saturday night, reposting Arsenal’s earlier message with an open padlock emoji and a pair of wide eyes. The subtle taunt reignited the fierce rivalry between the two north London clubs.
Arteta and Rice turn their focus to the future
Manager Mikel Arteta addressed the fans briefly but passionately during the celebrations. “On behalf of the team, this is just amazing to witness. You have created this,” he said. “This is your moment to enjoy it together. Have a beautiful day. Let’s go, Arsenal!” The Spaniard has already turned his attention to next season, beginning with the Community Shield clash against FA Cup holders Manchester City on August 16.
Rice shared his manager’s determination, insisting that the disappointment in Budapest would only strengthen the squad. “We are going to use this moment (losing to PSG) to drive us in the coming seasons,” Rice said. “Speaking with the players and the manager, there is no reason to stop here. Next season, we will come back stronger and ready again. These are exciting times for this club.”
