Google Mosquito Control Project: A type of disease is increasing all over the world which is spread by mosquitoes and takes the lives of millions of people every year. Such diseases include dengue, malaria, chikungunya and Zika virus, which still remains a big challenge for many countries to deal with, but now Google is working on a unique project to bring a solution to this problem. Which has attracted the attention of all the common people.
It is being said in the reports that preparations are being made to release 3.2 crore male mosquitoes reared in Google special laboratories into the open environment. Regarding which the company claims that this step will be useful in reducing the mosquito population in future.
Google’s special mission has been going on since 2014
For your information, let us tell you that Google has been working on mosquito control technology for the last several years under an initiative called Debug. For which crores of mosquitoes have been prepared for the project in laboratories located in Florida and California. According to the statement released on the Debug website, ‘Our Debug team is working with researchers, communities and government agencies around the world to develop new methods that control disease-carrying mosquitoes and help people live longer, healthier lives.’
How will this technology work?
Under this project, it is being told that male mosquitoes will be infected with a special strain of bacteria called Wolbachia pipientis. After which, if these male mosquitoes breed with female mosquitoes in the natural environment, then the eggs produced from them will not be able to develop. To put it in simple language, the birth of new generation mosquitoes will gradually start decreasing. This can reduce the total population of mosquitoes over time and also reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
Google Mosquito Control Project
3.2 crore mosquitoes will be released in two phases
Regarding the plan, it is being said that 1.6 crore male mosquitoes will be released in the first phase and the same number will be released again in the second phase. Regarding which scientists say that only female mosquitoes bite humans, hence releasing male mosquitoes will not pose a direct threat to people.
Waiting for approval but questions are arising
To bring forward this technology, Google had sought permission for this project from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in December 2025. But this proposal has remained the same for the last five months. On the one hand, many experts are calling it a revolutionary step for public health, while some people are also raising concerns about its possible side effects. In which it is being shown its disadvantages and it is being said that if the experiment does not give the expected results then the problem can become more complex.
