May 2026 Box Office: Karuppu, Drishyam 3, Raja Shivaji – Regional Cinema Rules Over Bollywood

The month of May saw a varied number of movies from Hindi as well as regional industries releasing in theatres.
While regional movies like Suriya’s , Mohanlal’s and Riteish Deshmukh’s broke records at the box office, the Hindi movies struggled to hit even combined Rs 150 crore box office.

May 2026 Box Office Report Card – Regional Movies Rule Over Bollywood
A total of eight prominent Hindi movies released in the month of May. These were Ek Din, Krishnavataram Part 1: The Heart (Hridayam), Main Actor Nahin Hoon, Daadi Ki Shaadi, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, Aakhri Sawal, Chand Mera Dil and The Great Grand Superhero: Aliens Ka Aagman. While The Great Grand Superhero: Aliens Ka Aagman and Main Actor Nahin Hoon received good reviews, none of the Hindi movies could do much at the box office with Pati Patni Aur Woh Do making some money followed by . The total worldwide box office biz for Hindi movies in May is around Rs 138.68 crore.
© BR FilmsIn comparison, regional movies like Riteish Deshmukh’s Raja Shivaji, Mohanlal’s Drishyam 3, Suriya’s Karuppu rocked the box office and shattered records in their respective film industries.
Directed by Riteish Deshmukh, Marathi movie Raja Shivaji collected around Rs 130 crore at the worldwide box office.
Also starring Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Fardeed Khan, Genelia Deshmukh and Salman Khan, Raja Shivaji is now the top grossing Marathi movie of all time and the first to hit Rs 100 crore in India.

© Aashirvad CinemasMohanlal’s Drishyam 3 directed by Jeethu Joseph received mixed reviews but still made money at the box office and has already hit Rs 200 crore becoming the sixth Malayalam movie to hit a double century.
It is currently the sixth biggest Malayalam grosser and has the potential to end up being the third or the fourth biggest in the list by the end of its run.
And the biggest blockbuster of the month is Suriya starrer Tamil movie Karuppu.
The RJ Balaji directorial has made over Rs 300 crore in 15 days and is currently the 10th biggest worldwide grosser of Tamil cinema beating Vijay starrer Varisu.
The other regional movies like Mammootty and Mohanlal’s Patriot even though bombed at the box office but still made over Rs 80 crore.
Tovino Thomas and Basil Joseph’s Athiradi too rocked the box office and has so far made over Rs 60 crore globally.

The Hindi cinema is expected to bounce back big time with several high-profile June releases. These include Bobby Deol’s Bandar (June 5), Varun Dhawan’s Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai (June 5), Diljit Dosanjh’s Main Vaapas Aaunga (June 12), Mahaakshay Chakraborty’s Haunted 3D: Echoes Of The Past (June 12), Manoj Bajpayee's Governor (June 12), Kangana Ranaut's Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata (June 12), Patralekha and Maanvi Gagroo's Heer Sara (June 12), Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna's Cocktail 2 (June 19) and Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty's Welcome to the Jungle (June 26).READ NEXT
