Reports suggest that Chelsea youngster Kendry Paez is set to be recalled to Stamford Bridge – but questions remain about what lies ahead for the teenager.
The Blues, renowned for their extensive list of transfers and loan deals, have struggled in recent seasons to integrate genuine world-class talent into their first-team setup.
Despite their heavy spending, Chelsea finished 10th in the 2025/26 Premier League season, trailing behind teams such as Brentford, Brighton, Sunderland and Bournemouth.
One of their most talked-about young prospects currently out on loan, once dubbed the club’s ‘lottery ticket’, appears poised to join their long list of transfer disappointments, forcing a tough decision this summer.
Chelsea’s so-called ‘lottery ticket’, Kendry Paez, is unlikely to deliver on that reputation anytime soon following a disappointing loan spell with River Plate.
The Ecuadorian midfielder, who had previously been loaned to RC Strasbourg, has struggled to make an impression in Argentina, starting only three matches since joining River Plate in January.
According to transfer specialist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are expected to bring Paez back after the World Cup, with local Argentine reports suggesting he may have already played his final match for River Plate.
It remains unclear whether Chelsea have the contractual option to recall the player midway through his loan period, but sources indicate that neither club is likely to oppose such a move.
In a positive turn, the 19-year-old has earned a spot in Ecuador’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, a decision confirmed by head coach Sebastian Beccacece, offering him a chance to revive his career on the international stage.
However, Paez heads into the tournament with minimal recent playing time, having been entirely left out of River Plate’s lineup during their recent Apertura playoff matches.
Across his loan spell, Paez has accumulated fewer than 500 minutes on the pitch, managing 11 substitute appearances alongside just three starts.
The youngster also endured a difficult period in Ligue 1 during his previous stint at RC Strasbourg, featuring in only 15 matches between July 2025 and his January switch to Argentina.
Although only 19, Paez’s inability to establish himself in two leagues of comparatively lower competitive standard raises doubts about his readiness for the Premier League level.
With new manager Xabi Alonso now overseeing Chelsea's squad, the club is expected to make a definitive decision on Paez’s development and long-term role after the World Cup, a challenge that continues to grow increasingly complex.
