Liverpool defender Jeremie Frimpong has urged fans to “relax” after a video went viral showing him celebrating passionately during Arsenal’s Champions League final defeat. The Dutch international was seen in high spirits as the Gunners suffered an agonising penalty shootout loss to Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest.
Heartbreak in Budapest for Arsenal
Arsenal’s European dream turned into despair in the Hungarian capital. The North London side had taken an early advantage thanks to a superb sixth-minute strike from Kai Havertz, but Ousmane Dembele equalised soon after. After extra time failed to separate the sides, the contest moved to a nerve-wracking penalty shootout that ultimately decided the outcome.
Eberechi Eze was the first to miss for Arsenal in the shootout, and Gabriel’s failed attempt later sealed their fate. The result meant PSG retained their Champions League crown, following their triumph over Inter last year. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s pursuit of their maiden Champions League title continues despite their domestic achievements.
Frimpong’s viral reaction explained
The football community was taken by surprise when videos surfaced online showing Frimpong celebrating Arsenal’s defeat with visible excitement. As Gabriel Magalhaes sent his crucial penalty over the bar, the Liverpool full-back was captured jumping from his seat and shouting with joy. Many speculated that Frimpong was simply enjoying the downfall of the Premier League champions.
However, the former Bayer Leverkusen star quickly sought to clarify the incident, making it clear that his reaction was not rooted in hostility towards Mikel Arteta’s team. Addressing the online buzz through Instagram, Frimpong explained: “chill me and my friend made a bet and I won and that’s why I was happy.”
Chelsea add to the online banter
Frimpong was not alone in savouring the moment. Arsenal’s London rivals Chelsea added to the online chatter with a cheeky post on their official Instagram page. The Blues wrote: “Come and visit London’s Home of Trophies. Book your Stadium Tour at Stamford Bridge now via the link on our story or in our bio.”
Later, the social media team at Stamford Bridge adopted a lighter tone, following up with: “We probably deserve another red card for that last post! But in all seriousness, congratulations to Arsenal on winning the Premier League and for a fantastic Champions League campaign. Looking forward to renewing our rivalry next season.”
Tribute to departing manager Arne Slot
Amid the buzz surrounding his celebrations, Frimpong also took a moment to send a heartfelt message to his departing manager. Arne Slot was relieved of his duties as Liverpool head coach just hours before the Champions League final in Budapest kicked off, marking an abrupt end to his time at Anfield. Frimpong expressed his gratitude to the Dutch boss through social media, writing: “Thank you for everything coach. All the best for the future!”
