Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martinez has left the door open for Cristiano Ronaldo to feature in the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Despite the Al-Nassr superstar turning 41, Martinez believes the veteran forward’s unmatched determination and mental drive could see him still representing his country when the global tournament reaches Portuguese soil.
The secret behind Ronaldo’s long-lasting career
Martinez attributes Ronaldo’s extraordinary longevity to his relentless inner motivation rather than just his physical fitness. The former Belgium manager maintains that while many focus on Ronaldo’s conditioning, it is his mindset that truly sets him apart. According to Martinez, Ronaldo’s unending desire to evolve and stay competitive is what allows him to remain at the top, regardless of the countless trophies he has already lifted during his illustrious career.
In an interview with El Larguero, Martinez explained: “We’ve come to a conclusion: I believe Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t play just to win a particular title, whether team or individual. His secret isn’t in his diet — it’s in his hunger. No matter what he wins, the next day he’s driven to get better. That goal-oriented mindset is what ensures his longevity. I’ve worked with many players who, after winning a UEFA Champions League or a Ballon d’Or, lose that same hunger.”
Chasing the 2030 World Cup dream
Portugal is set to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Morocco, sparking debate about whether Ronaldo could lead the national team at the age of 45. While the Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca has hinted that biological limitations could make it difficult, Martinez remains optimistic about his captain’s chances of making history once again.
When questioned about Ronaldo’s potential participation, Martinez was resolute in his belief that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will do everything possible to be part of the tournament. “He will fight for it. I think no one should doubt that — he’s certainly earned that right,” Martinez stated. “And yes, this is something we talk about on the coaching staff because Cristiano’s example is one we’d love to pass on to every young footballer in Portugal.”
The Real Madrid speculation
It isn’t only Ronaldo’s future that has drawn attention — Martinez himself has been asked about his next career move. With his contract as Portugal’s manager set to end after the next World Cup, questions have arisen about whether he would consider taking over at Real Madrid. Speculation has been fuelled by election candidates at the Spanish club suggesting discussions with a current Spanish coach, putting Martinez’s name in the mix.
When asked if he should keep his phone ready for a call from the Santiago Bernabeu, Martinez humorously dodged the question, saying after a short pause: “There is no network in Portugal.”
Ronaldo’s past talk of retirement
The uncertainty around Ronaldo’s future has also been shaped by his own earlier comments on retirement. In November 2025, the forward seemed convinced that the 2026 FIFA World Cup would mark his final appearance at the international level. Back then, he said: “My last World Cup? Yes, definitely. I’ll be 41 and I think that will be the right time, although I don’t know... As I said, I’m enjoying this moment.”
However, the opportunity to play a World Cup on home turf appears to have reignited his ambition. With Martinez’s endorsement and Ronaldo’s continued scoring form in Saudi Arabia, the legendary forward’s “last dance” might yet be delayed. For now, the focus remains on the current campaign, but the possibility of 2030 continues to loom large over the future of Portugal’s iconic No.7.
