Another thrilling UEFA Champions League season has drawn to a close, and it’s time for us to celebrate the standout performers and moments from the 2025/26 campaign.
Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their title after edging past Arsenal in a dramatic penalty shootout in Budapest. The result means that the Gunners will have to wait at least another year to claim their first-ever Champions League crown.
When PSG needed inspiration, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia rose to the occasion. After a subdued league phase, the Georgian winger switched gears in the knockout rounds, becoming the driving force behind the French club’s triumph.
Nicknamed ‘Kvaradona’, he was electric against Bayern Munich in the semi-finals. Even though Arsenal managed to restrict him in the final, he still made a decisive impact by winning the penalty that took the game into extra time.
The 25-year-old finished the season as joint-top for assists (6) and total goal involvements (16), underlining his influence in PSG’s journey.
This season also saw the emergence of a new talent in Lennart Karl. The young German forward took his chance under Vincent Kompany at Bayern Munich and made history in the Champions League.
At just 17, Karl became the youngest player ever to score in three consecutive Champions League matches. Having turned 18 in February, he wrapped up the European campaign with four goals and two assists, along with five goals and five assists in the Bundesliga. The teenager’s future looks incredibly bright.
In a competition often dominated by Europe’s heavyweights, it was refreshing to witness a true underdog story. Bodø/Glimt’s fairytale run to the round of 16 captured hearts across the continent. Hailing from a small Arctic Circle town with just about 53,000 residents, the Norwegian side once again proved that passion and teamwork can defy the odds.
They stunned Manchester City and Atletico Madrid to reach the play-offs, before eliminating last season’s runners-up, Inter Milan. Though they may have been slightly fortunate to win the home leg 3-1, their 2-1 triumph at the iconic San Siro confirmed their place as deserving winners over both legs.
It was the stuff that dreams are made of.
When it comes to goals, one strike stood above all others. Harry Kane’s delightful lofted pass, Luis Diaz’s impeccable touch, and the flawless finish combined for what many would call one of the greatest goals in Champions League history — a perfect example of pure street football played at the highest level.
Despite a turbulent season off the pitch, Real Madrid still produced moments of brilliance on it. One such moment came when Vinicius Junior picked out Kylian Mbappe with a sublime outside-of-the-boot pass that carved open the Olympiacos defence, allowing the Frenchman to calmly slot the ball past the goalkeeper.
Bayern Munich, meanwhile, were the entertainers of the tournament. Their quarter-final clash with Real Madrid was a spectacle, but their semi-final showdown with PSG surpassed even that.
The first leg saw an astonishing nine goals in an end-to-end battle at the Parc des Princes, featuring the finest attacking talent in world football. It was a contest that will be remembered as one of the all-time great Champions League matches.
Not every story was a happy one, though. Tottenham Hotspur’s Antonin Kinsky endured a nightmare debut against Atletico Madrid in the round of 16. The Czech goalkeeper’s slip led to the opening goal just five minutes into the match, and moments later, a poor clearance gifted Julian Alvarez a simple finish for Atletico’s third goal inside 15 minutes.
Manager Igor Tudor had no choice but to replace Kinsky with Guglielmo Vicario to bring an end to a disastrous evening. However, the young keeper showed commendable mental strength, bouncing back later to play a vital role in Spurs’ successful Premier League survival fight.
