A tough setback has struck the young Liverpool defender who only recently arrived at Anfield.

However, the Merseyside club now have a significant problem to deal with, especially as discussions over their summer transfer plans continue.

After a mid-season dip in form, Liverpool managed to recover their campaign, but securing European football is far from guaranteed following results like their defeat to Wolves on Tuesday night.

Although the Reds are still alive in both the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup, their recent struggles away from home worsened with the 2-1 loss at Molineux, causing them to lose ground on their positional rivals.

Before that unexpected defeat, it was confirmed that summer signing Jeremy Jacquet will miss the remainder of the season after being advised to undergo surgery for a serious shoulder injury.

Jacquet joined Liverpool from Rennes in January but was immediately loaned back to Ligue 1 to build experience and momentum before returning to Merseyside ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The young French centre-back was expected to provide solid competition next season, alongside Giovanni Leoni, who is still rehabilitating from an ACL tear suffered on his Liverpool debut.

This situation leaves Liverpool’s management with several important decisions to make, particularly given the ongoing uncertainty around Ibrahima Konate’s future, as Real Madrid continue to be linked with him.

The club’s hierarchy may now be forced to look for a temporary central defender before the 2026/27 campaign, especially if Konate departs on a free transfer and both Jacquet and Leoni are still regaining full fitness. Such a move could cost the club several million pounds—funds they would ideally prefer not to spend.

With both Jacquet and Leoni recovering from injuries over the same summer, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) might reconsider allowing Konate to leave, since relying on two inexperienced defenders returning from long layoffs could be risky for Premier League competition.

According to FourFourTwo’s analysis, Konate has been an integral part of Liverpool’s success in recent seasons, and retaining him as a mentor for the young defenders could prove to be a shrewd decision by the club’s board.
