PADANG – The Chairman of the West Sumatra Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), Muhidi, revealed that he is leaning towards supporting Portugal in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.

Although he has several favourite national teams, Muhidi believes that Portugal has a strong chance of performing competitively in the world’s most prestigious football tournament.

“I’m currently studying the teams because there are many young players I’m not yet familiar with in detail. But for the senior players, there are still a few I continue to follow,” Muhidi told reporters on Monday (1 June 2026).

According to him, the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo, who is reportedly still part of the Portuguese squad, is one of the main reasons he pays special attention to the team known as Selecao das Quinas.

He also noted that Portugal’s player regeneration process has been quite successful, with the emergence of several young talents across different positions.

“At the moment, Portugal looks very good. Moreover, Cristiano Ronaldo is said to still be playing in the World Cup and leading his team. I see that their young players – whether in defence, midfield, or attack – are performing really well,” he added.

Nonetheless, Muhidi acknowledged the strength of other major footballing nations that remain among his favourites.

He mentioned Brazil, Spain, and England as teams that still have strong potential to compete for the championship trophy.

In his view, Brazil can never be underestimated because of its deep-rooted football culture and long-standing tradition of excellence in the sport.

“Brazil can never be underestimated because football is already part of their blood. The same goes for Spain and England. These four teams have a special place for me,” he said.

However, among the four nations, Muhidi admitted that Portugal remains his top pick.

“Out of those four countries, the one I’m most inclined to support is Portugal,” he emphasised.

Apart from discussing his favourite team, Muhidi also encouraged the public to view the 2026 World Cup as an opportunity to strengthen togetherness and social ties.

He pointed out that the global football celebration should not only serve as entertainment but also bring positive economic effects, especially for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

He cited the example of community watch parties, which can help boost local economic activity.

“Let’s make the 2026 World Cup a platform to foster togetherness and social connection. It can also be a way to support MSMEs. During watch parties, people can buy local drinks like tea talua, coffee, or snacks. This definitely helps the community’s economy,” he explained.

Muhidi hopes that the 2026 World Cup will not only deliver exciting matches but also strengthen unity and solidarity among the public.

“Hopefully, the 2026 World Cup will entertain us while also building unity and togetherness among all of us,” he concluded.
