Bayern Munich’s star defender Alphonso Davies, who is currently recovering from injury, has joined the Canadian national football team ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
According to a report from AP, Davies was seen running laps before Canada’s 2-0 friendly victory over Uzbekistan in Alberta on Monday. However, he is still not ready to feature in competitive action just yet.
“It feels nice to be back on the pitch and get some running done. I’m happy to be home, happy to be with the boys and support them, whether that’s on or off the pitch,” said Davies.
With Canada scheduled to open their World Cup campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12, Davies refrained from specifying a return date.
“We’ll just see how things go over the next few days. I’ll continue with my rehab and progression, taking it day by day, step by step,” he explained.
Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsch emphasised that the team would not rush Davies back into action before he is fully fit.
“What we don’t want to do is put him in a situation where he suffers again or becomes vulnerable. You can imagine he wants to build up his body and regain full trust in it so that he can go out and play the football he loves,” Marsch stated, adding:
“We, as a coaching staff, will make sure we closely monitor him every single day, track his progress carefully, and put him in the best position to succeed — and I’m confident we’ll achieve that.”
