BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group First Technical Meeting

India chaired the first technical meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group. The meeting was held online on April 29 and 30 in which member countries discussed taking forward a common agenda to enhancing disaster resilience. “The first face-to-face (offline) technical meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group under India’s BRICS Chairmanship will be held in Puri from June 3 to 5, 2026,” Pujari said.

Disaster management experts from BRICS member countries will participate in this meeting.

He said that representatives of BRICS member and partner countries, policy-makers and disaster management experts will participate in this meeting. The minister said the meeting will discuss sustainable financing for disaster risk reduction, strong infrastructure, forecast-based response and inclusion of traditional knowledge in disaster management strategies. BRICS initially included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Its expansion in the year 2024 will include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and UAE.

It was expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, while Indonesia joined in 2025. BRICS has emerged as an influential group.
