Liverpool to retain Arne Slot as manager while Xabi Alonso targets a different Premier League opportunity: Report

Liverpool have decided to continue with Arne Slot at the helm, even as Xabi Alonso remains intent on landing a managerial role in the Premier League.

Slot is expected to stay in charge at Anfield for the 2025/26 campaign, despite the club enduring a disappointing season following their 2024/25 Premier League title triumph. The Reds have struggled to maintain their previous form and are now on the brink of recording one of their worst seasons in terms of defeats this century.

Although this season will end without any silverware, Liverpool’s hierarchy has reportedly opted to keep faith in Arne Slot, choosing stability over change. This decision comes amid ongoing speculation linking former midfielder Xabi Alonso to a managerial role in England’s top flight.

On Merseyside, the club’s leadership believes Slot deserves the opportunity to guide Liverpool back on course after a difficult year. Their decision effectively closes the door for Alonso, who was earlier considered a strong contender for the Anfield job.

According to reports from Fichajes, Chelsea have now emerged as a potential destination for Alonso, given the uncertain situation surrounding the West London club’s current manager, Liam Rosenior.

Rosenior’s future at Stamford Bridge appears increasingly uncertain following a dismal run of five successive Premier League defeats and seven losses in their last eight games. Their most recent setback came in a 3-0 defeat to Brighton, where Chelsea managed just 0.37 expected goals (xG) compared to Brighton’s 2.14.

Alonso’s managerial profile fits Chelsea’s needs perfectly. The Spanish coach is known for his tactical acumen, his ability to develop young players, and his experience at the top level of European football. During his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso guided the team to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season and also won the DFB Pokal. He later led Real Madrid to a second-place finish in La Liga before departing.

While Liverpool’s board is prioritising continuity with Arne Slot, Rosenior has not managed to garner the same trust from Chelsea’s management that Slot enjoys at Anfield. Reports from Chelsea insider Simon Phillips suggest that Rosenior’s dismissal could be imminent, potentially opening the door for Alonso to step in as the new head coach at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are set to return to FA Cup action this weekend, facing Leeds United in the semi-finals of the competition, as speculation over their managerial future continues to build.
