Rieka. Belgium registered a spectacular victory by defeating host Croatia 2-0 in the friendly practice match played on Tuesday as part of the preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
In this match, Belgium’s star striker Romelu Lukaku returned to the national team and scored his record 90th international goal. It was his first match for Belgium in the last 12 months.
Captain Youri Tielemans gave the initial lead to Belgium. Taking advantage of Croatia’s defensive mistake in the 38th minute, he scored a goal from close range. The move came after a brilliant attack from Jeremy Doku.
Both teams made many changes in the second half. Belgium fielded eight players, while Croatia made 10 changes. Lukaku was sent on the field for the last 18 minutes and he scored the goal with a sharp shot in the last attempt of the match.
Lukaku, 33, returns to club level after a disappointing season with Napoli. He could not make it to the starting eleven throughout the season and also struggled with a hamstring injury.
Belgium’s Hans Vanaken also attempted a header in the second half, but the ball hit the crossbar. Whereas Croatia’s Ante Budimir and Luka Modric could not capitalize on the chances.
Now Croatia will play its next practice match against Slovenia national football team, while Belgium will face Tunisia national football team.
Belgium will begin its World Cup campaign against Egypt on June 15, while Croatia will face the England national football team on June 17.
