MAROS – The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has begun.
The world’s biggest football tournament will take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada starting from 11 June 2026.
Excitement for the quadrennial football celebration is already being felt in various regions, including Maros Regency in South Sulawesi.
Several local figures in Maros have started to declare their support for their favourite national teams.
One of them is the Chairman of KONI Maros, Marjan Massere.
The Chairman of Commission II of the Maros Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) has expressed his confidence that Spain will emerge as the champion of the 2026 World Cup.
He believes that La Furia Roja possesses an excellent balance of young and experienced players, making them a strong contender for the title.
“I continue to support Spain. They have a great system of player regeneration and play an enjoyable, collective style of football,” he said on Wednesday (3 June 2026).
Marjan shared that his admiration for Spain began during the team’s golden era between 2008 and 2012.
During that period, Spain dominated world football by winning both the European Championship and the FIFA World Cup.
“I’ve always liked the way Spain plays. They focus on teamwork, patiently build attacks, and have high-quality players,” he added.
For the upcoming 2026 World Cup, Marjan pointed out that several young Spanish players are expected to play pivotal roles.
He mentioned Lamine Yamal as one of the most anticipated talents to watch.
He also placed high expectations on Pedri, whom he believes can effectively control the tempo of the Spanish midfield.
According to Marjan, the combination of youthful energy and veteran experience will be Spain’s biggest asset in advancing deep into the tournament.
He remains confident that Spain can compete strongly against other top nations such as Argentina, France, and Brazil.
Despite his busy schedule as both a DPRD Maros member and the KONI Maros Chairman, Marjan said he would still make time to follow key matches throughout the World Cup.
He even plans to organise public viewing events along with friends and football fans in Maros.
“If the schedule allows, we’ll definitely have watch parties. The World Cup is always a much-awaited event for football lovers. Apart from enjoying the matches, it’s also a great opportunity to strengthen community bonds,” he concluded.
