It is necessary to soak the pot in water before use
Placing new earthenware directly on gas can be dangerous. According to experts, a new clay pot should be soaked in water for at least a few hours. This keeps moisture in the pores of the soil and makes the pot more heat resistant. Some even suggest soaking overnight.
Oil coating
After removing the pot from the water, let it dry. Then it should be well coated with mustard oil or groundnut oil both inside and outside. After applying the oil coating, the vessel should be allowed to dry completely in hot sun for 1 to 2 days.
Do not over heat suddenly
Clay pots cannot withstand sudden changes in temperature. So always start cooking on low flame in the beginning. Placing a cold pot directly over high heat increases the chance of it bursting. Gradually increasing the temperature will make the pot last longer and the food will cook properly.
Avoid using metal spoons
The interior of earthen pots is delicate. So avoid using steel or metal spoons while cooking. It is considered safer to use wooden or silicone spoons instead. This prevents the pot from getting scratched and preserves its quality.
Pay special attention to cleanliness
Avoid using harsh detergents while cleaning earthenware. They should be cleaned using warm water and a soft scrubber. The pot should be kept only after it is completely dry, otherwise it may develop odor or mold.
Food in clay pots is healthier
According to experts, food is cooked slowly in a clay pot, thus retaining its natural flavors and nutrients. Delicious dishes are prepared even with less oil. Hence, many health conscious people are turning back to traditional earthenware.
