TSV 1860 Munich’s automatic demotion to the Regionalliga might not be the end of their troubles but rather the beginning of another major setback.
Reports suggest that if the Munich Lions are placed under administration, their investor Hasan Ismaik has no intention of stepping in to cover the financial deficit.
In an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung, the Jordanian businessman stated, “It has now become clear to everyone that injecting new capital every year cannot be a permanent fix.” He further explained, “The real problem is not about whether one person provides another with another loan. The real question is how the club plans to create a stable future that does not depend on emergency funds each season.”
Following the withdrawal of the club’s main sponsor 'die Bayerische', which exercised its special termination clause after relegation to the Regionalliga, reports have revealed that the club is short by €2.7 million — the exact amount required to secure a third-division licence and avoid insolvency.
On Wednesday, the club’s management informed supporters gathered at the Giesing headquarters that 1860 Munich would be relegated to the fourth-tier Regionalliga for the same financial reason.
Club president Gernot Mang confirmed the development, saying, “We did not receive the licence, which means we will compete in the Regionalliga next year.” He further acknowledged that the club missed the 5 p.m. deadline to cover the €2.7 million shortfall.
1860 Munich legends express outrage: “Irresponsible, spineless — from everyone involved.”
The club’s future now hangs in the balance. At present, only eight players from the third-division squad have contracts extending into the Regionalliga, and head coach Markus Kauczinski is unlikely to continue with the team into the lower division.
Club icons Daniel Bierofka and Sascha Mölders have lashed out at the current management with strong words. “It’s a disgrace. There’s no other way to describe what’s happening there,” Bierofka told BR24. “Irresponsible, spineless — from everyone involved. Nobody can claim they are blameless.”
Mölders called the situation “utter madness” and admitted, “I’m running out of words; I don’t know what else to say.” The 47-year-old urged the remaining players to stand together and lift the club again, as they did after the first enforced relegation in 2017: “I still remember Biero standing in front of me and saying, ‘Now you can prove you’ve got the courage to stay.’ I’m eager to see how many Lions still hold the club close to their hearts. Giving up is not an option. Ever.”
Back in 2017, Mölders himself stayed with 1860 Munich despite receiving better offers elsewhere. He scored 19 goals in 33 Regionalliga matches, leading the club back to the third division, and added three more goals in the tough promotion play-offs against Saarbrücken.
1860 Munich’s relegation to the Regionalliga marks another low point for the historic club. Here is a look at their last five finishes in the 3. Liga:
