Liam Delap has expressed his desire to remain at Chelsea for "at least another season" as he aims to prove his worth and quieten his critics after a challenging debut campaign. The 23-year-old forward is ready to compete for his place in the squad despite facing limited opportunities due to strong competition and a series of injuries.

Delap focused on securing his future with the Blues

According to reports from the BBC, Delap is committed to staying at Chelsea and intends to use the coming season to demonstrate his potential. The young striker joined the west London club with high expectations but endured a frustrating year marked more by injury setbacks than goal-scoring success.

Despite the difficulties, the former Manchester City player is not seeking an exit. He has recently shown his commitment by purchasing a home in the local area, signalling his long-term ambition to succeed at Chelsea. Delap is also said to be keen to work under Xabi Alonso, who will officially assume his managerial duties at Stamford Bridge on July 1.

A debut season to forget

Delap’s first season at Chelsea fell short of expectations, especially considering his £30 million transfer fee. He managed to score only one goal in the Premier League and two across 41 appearances in all competitions. His season ended on a disappointing note as he failed to find the net in his final 26 matches. A dislocated shoulder sustained against Bournemouth further hampered his ability to perform at his best.

Those close to Delap admit that his debut season has been underwhelming but point out that he faced a difficult adjustment period. The competition has only become tougher following the arrival of Joao Pedro, who joined from Brighton for £55 million and quickly became a key figure in Chelsea’s attack. Pedro’s strong performances have pushed Delap further down the pecking order, leaving his position in the squad uncertain.

Transfer interest and internal pressure

Although Delap is eager to remain at Chelsea, the club’s absence from European competitions next season means that the squad will need to be trimmed. Given his relatively modest transfer fee compared to other big-money signings, Delap could be seen as an "easier to move on" option if the club needs to balance its finances. After finishing 10th in the Premier League last season, Chelsea are under pressure to reshape the squad and provide Alonso with a more focused and competitive team.

Newcastle United are reportedly monitoring Delap’s situation closely as they look to strengthen their forward line. The Magpies are searching for a reliable striker and consider Delap a player with significant potential, despite his lack of goals. With Nicolas Jackson also expected to return from his loan spell at Bayern Munich, the competition for the striker role at Chelsea is set to intensify further.

The Alonso factor

Ultimately, Xabi Alonso will have the final say on Delap’s future. The Spanish manager will need to assess whether Delap’s work ethic and playing style fit into his vision for the team. Known for his physicality during his time at Ipswich Town, Delap has yet to replicate that level of dominance since joining Chelsea.

As Chelsea look to offload players to comply with UEFA’s financial fair play regulations and make room for new signings, Delap finds himself at a decisive point in his career. He is determined to prove that he can deliver at the top level, but he will need a strong start in pre-season to convince Alonso that he deserves a place in the new project at Stamford Bridge.
