Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already started working on the election strategy for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2027. The party has identified 61 assembly seats where it could not win in three consecutive assembly elections of 2012, 2017 and 2022. To win these seats, BJP has started a special campaign, which has been named ‘Mission-61’ within the organization.
Political analysts believe that if BJP is successful in improving its performance on these seats, it can achieve the target of more than 300 seats and return to power for the third consecutive time. This is the reason why special attention is being kept on these seats from the organization to the government.
22 seats of Purvanchal are the biggest challenge for BJP
In Mission-61, the maximum focus is on those seats of Purvanchal, where the traditional support base of Samajwadi Party is considered strong. Many seats of Azamgarh, Mau, Ghazipur, Ambedkarnagar, Sant Kabirnagar, Bhadohi and Ballia districts are included in the priority list of BJP. Among these, seats like Atraulia, Gopalpur, Sagdi, Mubarakpur, Nizamabad, Didarganj, Mohammadabad Gohna, Mau Sadar, Zahoorabad, Jakhanian, Malhani, Kerakat, Sakaldiha, Jangipur and Zamanian are prominent. In these areas, BJP is working on a strategy to strengthen its hold among non-Yadav backward classes, Dalits and beneficiary class.
Special campaign on 13 seats of Western UP also
Many seats of Saharanpur, Bijnor, Moradabad, Sambhal and Baghpat in western Uttar Pradesh are also considered to be part of Mission-61. The influence of Muslim, Jat and Dalit voters is more in these areas. BJP is trying to strengthen the social equation here with the help of Rashtriya Lok Dal and other allies.
The party is working under a special strategy on seats like Behat, Deoband, Nakur, Moradabad Rural, Kundarki, Kanth, Thakurdwara, Chandpur, Najibabad, Dhampur and Noorpur.
Election blueprint being prepared up to booth level
BJP has started separate social and political study of every assembly seat under Mission-61. The party is trying to find out which booths were consistently weak, in which ethnic groups its hold was weak and which local issues influenced the election results.
Workers have been instructed to conduct door-to-door contact campaigns, reach out to beneficiaries and activate booth committees. MPs, MLAs and senior leaders have also been given special responsibilities on these seats.
Why increased concern for SP?
A large number of Mission-61 seats are where Samajwadi Party or its allies are currently in a strong position. In the 2022 assembly elections, SP had given a tough challenge to BJP in many areas of Purvanchal and Western Uttar Pradesh.
Political experts believe that if BJP succeeds in strengthening its position on these seats, then it can have a direct impact on the assembly performance of Samajwadi Party. This is the reason why this campaign of BJP is becoming a matter of concern for the opposition, especially SP.
Emphasis on achieving caste equations
Under Mission-61, BJP is working on a strategy to include non-Yadav backward classes, non-Jatav Dalits, women and beneficiaries of government schemes. The party believes that a strong hold in these classes can challenge the social equation based politics of the opposition.
The role of BJP’s allies Apna Dal (S) and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party is also considered important in this campaign. Both the parties are busy strengthening the organization and increasing the social base in their respective areas of influence.
These seats can become the center of battle for 2027
There is discussion in political circles that the 2027 elections will not only be an election of big leaders and issues, but of booth management and social equations. In such a situation, these seats of Mission-61 can play a decisive role in deciding the path to power. While BJP wants to end the drought of victory in these areas, SP is facing the challenge of saving its strongholds.
