For numerous students who pass the JEE Advanced exam, gaining admission to the Computer Science Engineering (CSE) branch is often the primary goal due to its popularity and excellent job prospects. However, not all students manage to secure a spot in CSE. As a result, many choose alternative branches such as Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Aerospace, Metallurgy, or Engineering Physics. Some of these fields have placement statistics that are comparable to those of Computer Science. Here, we highlight five IITs renowned for their exceptional placement outcomes in disciplines other than Computer Science.
1. IIT Bombay
IIT Bombay stands out as one of the leading engineering institutions in India. Apart from Computer Science, branches like Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Aerospace, and Engineering Physics attract significant interest from both core and non-core recruiters. Notably, students in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering often land high-paying jobs. In the previous placement season, 244 students from Electrical Engineering, 213 from Mechanical Engineering, and 98 from Chemical Engineering received job offers. The highest annual packages reported were ₹1.2 crore for Electrical Engineering, ₹45 lakh for Mechanical Engineering, and ₹40 lakh for Civil Engineering.
2. IIT Delhi
IIT Delhi is an excellent option not just for Computer Science aspirants but also for those pursuing other engineering fields. Students specializing in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, and Production Engineering frequently receive job offers from consulting firms, tech companies, financial institutions, and major engineering corporations. Last year, the highest annual packages were ₹80 lakh for Electrical Engineering, ₹60 lakh for Mechanical Engineering, ₹52 lakh for Civil Engineering, and ₹55 lakh for Chemical Engineering.
3. IIT Madras
IIT Madras has established itself as one of India's top engineering colleges, achieving remarkable placements for students across various branches, including Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical, Electrical, and Naval Architecture. In the last placement cycle, the highest annual packages were ₹1.1 crore for Electrical Engineering, ₹50 lakh for Mechanical Engineering, ₹45 lakh for Civil Engineering, and ₹40 lakh for Chemical Engineering.
4. IIT Kanpur
At IIT Kanpur, students in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mathematics enjoy excellent placement opportunities. Recruiters from the semiconductor industry, research institutions, and financial firms actively seek graduates from this institute. Last year, the average annual packages were ₹27 lakh for Electrical Engineering, around ₹20 lakh for both Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and ₹16 lakh for Civil Engineering.
5. IIT Kharagpur
As the oldest IIT in India, IIT Kharagpur also conducts one of the largest placement drives in the country. Students from branches such as Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgical, Mining, and Chemical Engineering find employment in sectors like engineering, consulting, and analytics. Last year, the average annual packages were ₹21 lakh for Electrical Engineering, ₹18 lakh for Mechanical Engineering, ₹19 lakh for Aerospace Engineering, ₹17 lakh for Chemical Engineering, and ₹15 lakh for Civil Engineering.
