Thomas Tuchel’s plans for the international break have been disrupted after England duo Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka were released from the national squad to return to Arsenal for medical evaluation. The two players, who joined the England camp only last Friday following their rest during the 1-1 draw against Uruguay, will not feature in the upcoming match against Japan. The Football Association confirmed their withdrawals along with six others, leaving the group notably reduced ahead of the Wembley fixture.
Arsenal trio headline multiple withdrawals
The timing could hardly be worse for Tuchel, who had aimed to reintegrate key senior figures after giving them a short recovery period. Instead, Rice and Saka will head back to north London, adding to Mikel Arteta’s growing list of fitness concerns. With the Premier League title race entering a decisive phase, Arsenal supporters will be anxiously awaiting the outcome of the medical checks on two of their pivotal players.
Tuchel voices concern over Madueke injury
Although Rice and Saka’s exits are considered precautionary, greater worry surrounds Noni Madueke, who suffered a heavy fall on his left knee during the draw with Uruguay. The 24-year-old was substituted in the 37th minute after a strong challenge from Rodrigo Aguirre and later left the ground with his leg strapped in a protective brace. The setback comes just as Madueke was beginning to establish himself in Tuchel's lineup.
“I’m definitely concerned because he’s been a real difference-maker,” Tuchel remarked about the Arsenal winger. “He started brightly, full of energy and intent. It’s very unfortunate and upsetting, and I really hope it’s nothing serious. Against a team like Uruguay, who thrive on one-on-one duels, his ability to create space is crucial. He could have been a key player for us — and he is.”
Stones and Wharton add to injury woes
The injury troubles extend beyond Arsenal. Manchester City’s John Stones was also forced to withdraw due to a calf issue. Stones had been expected to start against Uruguay but felt discomfort during the warm-up and was replaced. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has similarly returned to his club for further assessment as injuries continue to pile up during this international break.
Tuchel sympathised with Stones, saying: “He’s obviously very disappointed and right now he needs my full support more than extra pressure.” Other players leaving the squad include Fikayo Tomori, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, though some of these changes are tactical as Tuchel seeks to rotate his options and provide game time to those who joined the camp later.
Reinforcements report as Tuchel seeks balance
Despite the spate of withdrawals, England’s squad will be strengthened by the arrival of captain Harry Kane and several others who checked in on Friday. Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, and Marc Guehi are all expected to feature against Japan as Tuchel continues refining his setup ahead of the World Cup. The coach had earlier explained his decision to divide the group into two units to better manage player workloads amid a congested season.
England’s current squad stands at 27 players, with defender Ben White remaining in contention despite receiving boos from parts of the Wembley crowd during the Uruguay match. Making his first appearance since the 2022 World Cup, White experienced a mixed outing — scoring England’s lone goal before conceding the penalty that led to Uruguay’s equaliser. Tuchel now faces the task of lifting morale and finding a winning formula against Japan without several of his key regulars.
