In Serie A news, Mason Greenwood, the player targeted by AS Roma, has given a major indication that he is ready to join Fenerbahce.
The AS Roma target, Mason Greenwood, has reportedly agreed to personal terms with Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi.
This move signals that Greenwood is leaning towards joining the Turkish club.
The Olympique Marseille winger is set to be sold this summer as the club faces severe financial difficulties and must raise funds before the end of June.
Gian Piero Gasperini has made no secret of his desire to bring in the former Manchester United player.
AS Roma’s coach believes Mason Greenwood would fit perfectly into his 3-4-3 system.
Mason Greenwood leaning towards Fenerbahce
However, the €50 million price tag remains a significant obstacle.
Fenerbahce, though, are reportedly willing to outbid AS Roma both in transfer fee and personal terms.
Reports indicate that Mason Greenwood has already agreed on personal terms with Fenerbahce’s presidential candidate, Hakan Safi.
This was later confirmed by Safi himself during a press conference, announcing a four-year contract agreement.
Greenwood further hinted at his decision by following Safi on Instagram — a move widely seen as confirmation of his choice.
This development forces AS Roma to look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements.
It has been reported that Gian Piero Gasperini personally attempted to convince the player about Roma’s project.
However, Roma’s initial offer of €40 million including bonuses still falls short of Marseille’s €50 million valuation.
The high asking price is partly due to Marseille owing half of the amount to Manchester United as part of their original purchase agreement.
AS Roma prepares €40 million offer for Mason Greenwood
AS Roma has prioritized signing Mason Greenwood to strengthen their attacking line.
The club is reportedly preparing a €40 million offer for the Olympique Marseille forward.
Roma’s transfer budget is larger than usual this summer after securing a Champions League spot for the first time in seven years.
Last season, coach Gian Piero Gasperini frequently expressed frustration over the lack of strikers suited to his tactical style.
He highlighted the significant impact following Donyell Malen’s arrival from Aston Villa in January.
Greenwood currently tops Roma’s wishlist as the ideal addition to their forward line, especially as the Englishman is available due to Marseille’s financial troubles.
Reports suggest Roma’s initial offer of €40 million plus bonuses for the 24-year-old, who primarily plays on the right side of a front-three formation, may not be enough since Marseille demands around €50–55 million.
The former England international, a product of Manchester United’s youth academy, almost saw his career end due to an off-field scandal but revived it after moving to France in 2024 for €26 million.
Greenwood scored 26 goals and provided 11 assists in 45 competitive matches for Marseille this season.
As part of the deal, 40 percent of any future transfer fee will go to Manchester United.
Roma appoints new sporting director as they pursue Marseille star
AS Roma has appointed Tony D’Amico as their new sporting director following the dismissal of Frederic Massara amid long-standing tensions with Gian Piero Gasperini.
D’Amico and Gasperini previously worked together successfully for several years at Atalanta.
The executive had been linked with AC Milan but opted not to wait for their internal restructuring.
The Giallorossi have already begun their summer business by officially releasing Donyell Malen and extending Mario Hermoso’s contract.
After meeting Financial Fair Play obligations, the club’s main priority is to provide Gasperini with more attacking options, according to Alfredo Pedullà.
Roma remains keen on Mason Greenwood but acknowledges the transfer fee may be too steep.
While they are not giving up yet, it could take as much as €50 million to persuade Olympique Marseille to part with the player.
Greenwood has scored 48 goals and recorded 17 assists in 81 appearances during his time in France.
The Giallorossi have also been linked with Antonio Nusa of RB Leipzig and Crysencio Summerville of West Ham, although no concrete steps have been taken yet.
The club’s goal is to secure a player capable of making a real difference, rather than simply adding depth to the squad.
A new central striker is not seen as an immediate necessity.
Roma is also open to offers for Manu Kone, Evan Ndicka, and Matias Soule as part of their balancing strategy, with the Argentine’s potential Premier League move gaining momentum.
Transfer dealings between directors often work in complex ways, but Roma quickly moved for Giovanni Manna from Napoli to avoid missing out on other solid options.
Signing a marquee attacker could ease the impact of losing Soule, though spending such a large sum on one player seems unlikely.
Manu Kone could leave AS Roma despite Champions League qualification
Although AS Roma has secured qualification for the Champions League, they may still have to sell Manu Kone.
Inter Milan had previously shown interest in the French midfielder, who has been one of Roma’s standout performers over the past two seasons.
The Nerazzurri now appear more focused on signing Curtis Jones, but Kone’s future remains uncertain.
Reports suggest that new sporting director Tony D’Amico’s first major task will be player sales, as Roma must generate €60 million in capital gains to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.
As a result, Manu Kone has emerged as the leading candidate to be sold.
It is believed that Kone’s focus has waned recently, as he trained alone ahead of the match against Verona, despite being fit to train with the rest of the squad.
Roma views this as an indication that Kone himself is open to leaving, with interest coming from both Inter Milan and PSG.
Gasperini’s side values the midfielder at €50 million, which would represent a considerable profit given his current book value of €11 million.
However, given Roma’s financial constraints, they might accept €40 million plus bonuses for his transfer.
Roma’s limited options
Given the current circumstances, Manu Kone is arguably Roma’s most valuable asset.
Mile Svilar could be equally valuable, though he has shown no signs of wanting to leave, which is a positive sign for the club.
Evan Ndicka also holds significant market value and, like Kone, could be sold since he joined on a free transfer.
With the upcoming World Cup, Kone’s value could rise further — something Gasperini is hoping for as Roma prepares to find possible replacements.
