The 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been named in India T20I squad for the upcoming Ireland and England tour.

The BCCI announced the squad for the upcoming assignments on June 06. The squad will be led by newly appointed T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, while former captain Suryakumar Yadav, who led India for the third T20 World Cup title, has been left out of the squad.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi had a breakout season, making 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30. Before the series, Suryavanshi will play for India A in a tri-series in Sri Lanka, also involving Afghanistan, from June 09 to 21.

If Vaibhav Suryavanshi makes his debut against Ireland, he will become the first India player to make his men’s international debut before turning 16.

On the other hand, Tilak Varma has been named as the vice captain as the management is aiming to build the squad for the Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup in 2028.

Suryakumar Yadav, 35, will be 38 before the next T20 World Cup in 2028, and there is concern over his batting form. He scored 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72, while he had 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54 in the IPL 2026.

Meanwhile, Prince Yadav has been a notable inclusion in India’s T20I squad. Shreyas Iyer has been consistent in the T20 format since his last international appearance in the short format. He captained the Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in the 2024 season before guiding the Punjab Kings in the finals in the 2025 season.

His batting has also been impressive during this period, which includes a maiden IPL century and 498 runs in the recently concluded season.

“His own performances have been really good. He was quite close to getting into that World Cup squad as well. Obviously, with Surya still there, there was no room for him. He’s, in my opinion, a standout candidate, with enough experience now, having led in the T20 format. This is obviously a different challenge,” Agarkar added.

Despite Punjab Kings missing the IPL 2026 playoffs, Shreyas Iyer enjoyed another productive campaign, scoring 498 runs at an average of 55.23 at a strike rate of 168.81.
