A severe thunderstorm warning has been announced for several regions in Western Pennsylvania, effective until 3 p.m. on Saturday. The counties affected include Allegheny, Greene, and Washington. Areas such as Mount Lebanon, Bethel Park, McKeesport, Washington, Canonsburg, Waynesburg, and parts extending into West Virginia like Wheeling, Weirton, Moundsville, Martins Ferry, Wellsburg, and Steubenville are included in this alert. The National Weather Service has indicated that these storms have already caused damaging winds and have been accompanied by frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. Heavy rainfall could result in flash flooding in certain locations. Residents are advised to seek shelter in sturdy buildings, avoid windows, and refrain from driving through flooded areas.
Northeast Ohio Faces Severe Weather Threat
In Northeast Ohio, particularly around Cleveland, severe weather warnings are also in effect. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Ashtabula, Carroll, and Tuscarawas counties until 2 p.m. on Saturday. The National Weather Service has warned that these storms may produce large hail, damaging winds, and hazardous lightning. A previous warning for Ashland, Richland, Holmes, and Wayne counties has been lifted. Additionally, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains active until 6 p.m. for a wider range of counties in Ohio, including Carroll, Columbiana, Coshocton, Holmes, Stark, and Tuscarawas.
Safety Precautions
Officials are reminding the public that lightning poses a significant risk. The general guideline is straightforward: if thunder can be heard, you are close enough to be at risk of being struck. It is crucial to stay indoors, keep away from windows, and never attempt to drive through flooded roads.
