Workplace Wellness : Workplace wellness has become an important part of the conversation these days as most people spend a large portion of their day in a work environment. Work pressure, constant deadlines and increasing responsibilities are directly affecting the mental and physical health of employees. Meanwhile, experts say that it has become more important now than ever to set “work boundaries” i.e. clear boundaries between work and personal life.

According to experts, being a constant workaholic, answering emails late at night and being available all the time may seem to be a sign of dedication, but in the long run it can lead to stress, fatigue, sleep problems and burnout. When work starts interfering in personal life, it also affects mental health.

Roshni Sandhi Abbi, clinical psychologist, Gurugram-based EDU Mindfulness, Fortis Healthcare, says that setting boundaries at work is not a lack of commitment, but a necessary step for mental health. According to him, this helps employees manage their time, energy and workload better and become more productive.

Experts also say that setting boundaries increases employees’ sense of self-reliance and control, which enables them to perform better and also strengthens relationships in the workplace.

However, experts also believe that the responsibility of stress management cannot be put on the employees alone. In high pressure times the role of managers becomes extremely important.

According to Dr. Vikram Vora, Medical Director of International SOS, working under constant pressure and without support can lead to employee burnout and decreased productivity. In such a situation the role of leadership becomes important.

Managers have been advised to clarify work priorities, remove unnecessary tasks and make it clear to the team which tasks are not urgent. Apart from this, it is also said to be important to accept the stress of the employees, communicate openly and promote short breaks.

Experts also said that flexible working hours, remote or hybrid work and giving timely appreciation reduce employee stress and increase their efficiency.

Ultimately, experts concluded that setting and respecting work boundaries has become a must in today’s workplace, benefiting both the employee and the organization.
