On Sunday, President Droupadi Murmu extended her congratulations to the Indian women's football team for their victory in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women's Championship 2026. She praised the players for their remarkable skill, determination, and teamwork displayed throughout the tournament.

"Heartfelt congratulations to the Indian Women's Football Team for winning the SAFF Women's Championship 2026! Our women athletes showcased exceptional talent and teamwork during the tournament. I believe their outstanding achievement will motivate young girls across the country to chase their dreams with confidence and bravery," stated Rashtrapati Bhavan in a post on X.

India achieved a historic sixth title in the SAFF Women's Championship with a decisive 3-1 win against Bangladesh in the final held at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa on Saturday. Pyari Xaxa initiated the scoring in the 42nd minute, but Bangladesh's Ritu Porna Chakma equalized just before halftime. India quickly regained the lead when Sanfida Nongrum scored just 40 seconds into the second half, and substitute Lynda Kom Serto confirmed the victory with a goal in the 82nd minute.

This victory marked India's return to the pinnacle of South Asian women's football for the first time since 2019, thwarting Bangladesh's attempt to secure a third consecutive title. India dominated the tournament, winning all four matches, netting 18 goals while conceding only once.

Sanfida was honored as the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while Aveka Singh emerged as the top scorer with four goals. The win also served as a fitting farewell for veteran player Dangmei Grace, who retired after contributing to her third SAFF title. Nepal was awarded the Fair Play Award, and Panthoi Chanu Elangbam was recognized as the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament.
