Thomas Tuchel has voiced his dissatisfaction with England’s tactical approach during their final warm-up match for the 2026 World Cup, describing their first-half display against New Zealand as “freestyle football.” Although England managed to secure a 1-0 win in Tampa, the German head coach was unhappy with how his players strayed from the tactical structure he had emphasized in training.
Tuchel Demands Tactical Discipline
Tuchel offered a blunt assessment of England’s close win over New Zealand, expressing disappointment over the team’s lack of organization during the opening 45 minutes at Raymond James Stadium. While Harry Kane’s goal ultimately sealed the victory, the overall performance raised concerns for Tuchel about his team’s tactical unity ahead of the World Cup in North America.
“I’m OK with it,” said the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager. “I’m not super-happy about it. I liked the second half more than the first half. We played more from our positions and that’s why we had more speed, and off the ball, we played with more intensity. In the first half, we were out of position and it was a bit too much freestyle. That slowed our game down and made counter-pressing difficult because we weren’t in the right positions when starting our attacks. That’s basically the story of the match.”
Training Ground Frustrations
The main reason behind Tuchel’s frustration was the team’s inability to apply what they had been practicing during training sessions. He observed that the players drifted toward a more individualistic, long-ball style instead of maintaining the collective patterns he has been trying to implement since taking charge of the Three Lions.
Expanding on his criticism, Tuchel said: “We were lacking width, so players were coming inside, narrowing the play, slowing ourselves down, and switching positions for too long. We were attempting crosses and taking long-range shots, which are normally not our style. We played too many long balls and long passes. That was not part of our training over the past four days.”
Bellingham Brings Energy
A highlight for England was the second-half introduction of Jude Bellingham. The Real Madrid midfielder, recently back from injury, replaced Morgan Rogers and immediately injected pace and control into the game. Tuchel was quick to applaud the youngster’s performance, suggesting that Bellingham is rediscovering top form just in time for the team’s opening group fixture against Croatia on June 17.
“Jude has that decisiveness and bite,” Tuchel explained. “That’s a key quality. You can see he’s back from injury full of energy and joy to be on the pitch again. He missed some decisive moments of the season, but now he’s in a really good place. He’s fresh, eager to play, and in great shape.”
Speaking about his match-winner, Harry Kane, who scored his 79th goal for England, Tuchel said: “He’s always there to find the net. It was a crucial goal. Harry is in excellent form, and I believe that when the pressure mounts and the tournament begins, it will bring out the best in all our players.”
Adapting to the Heat
The hot and humid conditions in Tampa also contributed to England’s sluggish performance, with the Florida sun testing their endurance. However, Tuchel considered the experience valuable, emphasizing that the squad must adapt to such conditions ahead of the World Cup. England will now travel to Orlando for their final friendly against Costa Rica on Wednesday.
“We had one training session in the sun, and now this match felt very unusual,” Tuchel admitted. “But it’s good to be exposed to it — that’s exactly why we’re here. We wanted this challenge, and we need to get used to it because it’s something we’ll definitely face later.”
