India started the day with a score of 368/3. Shubhman Gill and Rishabh Pant took the innings forward. However, Afghanistan’s fast bowler Mohammad Salim bowled brilliantly and gave some shocks to India by taking the wickets of Gill (126), Pant (81) and Dhruv Jurel. Salim impressed by taking 6 wickets in just his second Test.
Despite this, the depth of India’s batting was visible. Washington Sundar scored unbeaten 52 runs while Mohammed Siraj played a quick inning of 22 runs in just 12 balls. All 10 batsmen of India were successful in crossing double figures. KL Rahul (100), Shubhman Gill (126), B Sai Sudarshan (81) and Rishabh Pant (81) played important roles in taking the team to the huge score. India finally declared the innings at 564/8.
After this, when Afghanistan came out to bat, Manav Suthar did wonders in his very first test. He gave initial success to India by dismissing Abdul Malik in his first over itself. Malik tried to play a sweep, but the ball took the upper edge of the bat and went into the hands of Mohammad Siraj.
Suthar did not stop here, he also sent Rahmanullah Gurbaz to the pavilion by getting him caught at slip on a ball taking excellent turn. Tremendous turn and flight was seen in his balls throughout the session. He bowled long spells and maintained constant pressure on the batsmen and took three wickets by the end of the day.
Famous Krishna and Kuldeep Yadav also supported him well. Prasidh gave another blow to Afghanistan by taking the wicket of Sediqullah Atal. On the other hand, Rahmat Shah definitely showed some fight by scoring 43 runs, but the Afghan team remained under constant pressure.
The biggest problem for Afghanistan was the misuse of DRS. He missed important chances against Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, of which India took advantage. By the end of the second day’s play, the match appeared to be completely in India’s control. The huge score and a brilliant start from Manav Suthar gave the hosts a strong lead towards victory. The threat of follow-on is looming over Afghanistan. At the end of the day’s play, Afghanistan scored 113 runs for 5 wickets in 39.5 overs.
