Bernardo Silva stands at a crucial juncture in his career with his contract at Manchester City set to expire this month. The Portuguese midfielder, who has been a central figure in City’s success, continues to attract strong interest from La Liga, and his national coach believes Silva has the rare qualities to excel at the very top of the game.

Martinez on Silva’s adaptability

Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martinez has voiced complete faith that Silva would be an ideal fit for Barcelona. Speaking after Portugal’s 2-1 friendly win over Chile on Saturday, the Spanish manager was asked about the possibility of Silva joining Hansi Flick’s new project at Camp Nou and whether the experienced playmaker would suit the system there.

Martinez was full of admiration for the 31-year-old, remarking, “I believe Bernardo Silva is such an extraordinary player that he can belong to any dressing room in world football. A player like him doesn’t just appear suddenly — he’s someone who can adjust to every system and style and make those around him better.”

The intelligence that defines Silva

Although Silva is widely praised for his relentless energy and technical finesse, Martinez chose to emphasise his mental sharpness on the pitch. The Portuguese coach underlined that Silva’s tactical awareness and adaptability distinguish him from other creative midfielders, as he can control matches from various positions across the field.

“It’s not about his position; it’s about his football intelligence and his technical quality, which enable him to dominate every situation he’s part of. I’m certain he would fit perfectly at Barca,” Martinez added.

Silva keeps his options open

Despite heavy speculation surrounding his future, Silva remains measured in his approach. Having opted not to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium, the Manchester City icon is attracting multiple offers. While Barcelona continues to be viewed as a dream destination, Atletico Madrid are also reportedly making a strong push to sign him.

Speaking recently to the media, Silva acknowledged that his next move is still undecided. “Barca is one of the options I have, but I haven’t made a decision yet. I’ll look for a team where I’m truly wanted and valued — that’s very important to me. You’ll find out once I’ve made my choice,” he said.

Focus shifts to Portugal’s final warm-up

While transfer discussions continue, Silva remains fully focused on national duty as Portugal gear up for the World Cup. He featured in the first half of their win over Chile, displaying the technical excellence and leadership that Martinez believes can lift any team environment.

Portugal now turn their attention to their final pre-tournament match, set against Nigeria on Wednesday. This will serve as their last test before flying to the United States. The Selecao have a demanding schedule ahead, beginning their Group Stage campaign on June 17, when they open their World Cup journey against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Houston.
