Arsenal’s hopes of signing Julian Alvarez appear to have hit a major obstacle as the Argentine forward has reportedly made up his mind about his next move.
Alvarez, who has been on Mikel Arteta’s radar for over a year, was seen as the ideal addition to the Gunners’ attack. Arteta was believed to have considered a bid for the World Cup winner last summer before ultimately opting to bring in Viktor Gyokeres instead.
Gyokeres’ first season in North London has been largely positive. The striker netted crucial goals on the way to Arsenal’s Premier League triumph, although he was left out of some of the club’s biggest fixtures, including the Champions League final.
In the lead-up to the summer transfer window, which opens in a week, Alvarez has drawn interest from several European giants, including Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
However, Atletico Madrid are determined to hold onto their prized forward. The Spanish club has publicly voiced its displeasure over ongoing speculation about Alvarez’s future, particularly amid strong links to Barcelona.
For a time, it seemed almost certain that Alvarez would leave Atletico. But recent reports suggest the situation has changed dramatically.
According to Spanish media outlet Cadena SER, Alvarez has no interest in joining either Arsenal or PSG. Instead, his preference is a move to Barcelona, although he is now most likely to remain at Atletico Madrid for the foreseeable future.
The striker is reportedly content in the Spanish capital and has no intention of forcing a transfer. Atletico, meanwhile, are unwilling to enter negotiations with Barcelona, and as things stand, there are no talks underway. This makes it increasingly likely that Alvarez will stay at the club beyond the summer window.
