Kylian Mbappe has been honoured as Real Madrid’s Player of the Season for the second year in succession, capping off another prolific individual campaign. Yet, the 27-year-old’s impressive goal-scoring feats have been clouded by growing discontent at the Santiago Bernabeu, where frustrated supporters have turned their ire towards their own squad amid a second consecutive trophyless season.

Mbappe continues to dominate in La Liga and the Champions League

On Wednesday, Mbappe was officially named Real Madrid’s Player of the Season, mirroring his achievement from the 2024-25 term. The French forward topped the La Liga scoring charts with 25 goals, securing the Golden Boot for the second year running. He also finished as the leading scorer in the Champions League with 15 goals. Across all competitions, Mbappe was directly involved in 49 goals this season, netting 42 and providing seven assists in 44 appearances. Since joining on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, he has registered 86 goals and 12 assists in 103 matches for Los Blancos.

Tension mounts at the Bernabeu despite personal brilliance

Despite these exceptional statistics, Mbappe’s individual accolades contrast sharply with Real Madrid’s collective shortcomings. The club has gone two full seasons without lifting a major trophy, missing out on La Liga, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa. This extended drought has fuelled widespread frustration among fans.

In a recent 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo, the mood in the stands turned bitter as fans expressed anger over losing the league crown to arch-rivals Barcelona. Vinicius Junior and Aurelien Tchouameni were loudly booed, while banners criticising club president Florentino Perez were also unfurled around the stadium.

Managerial instability deepens Madrid’s crisis

The tense atmosphere has been further aggravated by managerial turbulence. Over the course of Mbappe’s two years at the club, Madrid have gone through three different head coaches. Carlo Ancelotti’s departure last summer saw Xabi Alonso take charge, but his spell was short-lived, leading to Alvaro Arbeloa stepping in as interim manager to steady a fractured dressing room.

After another frustrating domestic campaign, Mbappe now turns his attention to international duty. Included in Didier Deschamps’ France squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, the forward will look to capture a second world title after his 2018 triumph. Remarkably, he is just four goals away from equalling Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup scoring record. His current tally of 12 goals from 14 matches puts him level with Pele.

Mourinho set for Bernabeu return

Following a 4-2 win over Athletic Club to close out the season, Real Madrid are preparing for a major summer overhaul. Jose Mourinho is reportedly poised to return for a second spell in charge, with hopes of restoring order and discipline within the squad.

As Mbappe chases further glory on the world stage, Real Madrid’s management face the urgent task of repairing the fractured relationship with supporters and closing the competitive gap with their biggest domestic rivals.
