In a heartbreaking incident early Saturday morning, a 22-year-old student from Penn State was fatally shot in South Philadelphia while trying to confront thieves who had stolen his phone. The victim, identified as Billy Schmidt, was just a short distance from his family's residence when the robbery occurred around 1:30 a.m. Surveillance cameras captured the moment, revealing Schmidt pleading for the return of his phone before a gunshot was heard. Reports indicate that the phone was later discovered discarded beneath a parked vehicle. Schmidt was quickly transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to his father, Bill, Schmidt had been returning home after enjoying the NBA Finals with friends when the robbery took place. Bill expressed his disbelief that his son would chase after the robbers, recounting how a second suspect emerged and opened fire. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is still active.

Billy Schmidt was a dedicated student pursuing a degree in digital journalism and media at Penn State World Campus, with graduation planned for December. He was gearing up for his senior year. His father described him as a kind-hearted individual who cared deeply for those around him, labeling his death as a tragedy. Neighbors also shared their memories of Schmidt, calling him a wonderful young man.

The university issued a statement expressing their sorrow over Schmidt's passing and extended heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. They confirmed that he was a fourth-semester student from Philadelphia studying digital journalism and media. The statement conveyed, "We are heartbroken this morning to learn of the tragic death of William Schmidt, and we share our deepest condolences with his family and friends."
