Harry Kane’s extraordinary scoring run this season has brought him within striking distance of one of English football’s most enduring records—one that many believed would never be surpassed.

It seemed fitting that Kane was the player to complete Bayern Munich’s remarkable comeback against Mainz on Saturday.

In yet another highlight of a season where the England captain has made the extraordinary appear routine, Kane’s close-range strike seven minutes from time sealed a dramatic 4-3 victory for the Bundesliga champions, who had trailed 3-0 at half-time.

The goal marked Kane’s 53rd in domestic competitions this season. The former Tottenham Hotspur star is now preparing to lead Bayern against defending champions Paris Saint-Germain tonight in the first leg of an eagerly anticipated UEFA Champions League semi-final.

Kane will be hoping that tonight’s clash at the Parc des Princes becomes another significant step towards a potential treble for Bayern Munich, who have already clinched the Bundesliga title and will face VFB Stuttgart in the DFB Pokal final on May 23.

Depending on whether Bayern reach the Champions League final, the Bavarian side have six or seven matches remaining this season across all competitions. That gives Kane a genuine opportunity to surpass an astonishing English goalscoring milestone that has stood unchallenged for nearly a century.

Dixie Dean’s name remains etched in English football history thanks to his phenomenal achievements with Everton during the 1927/28 season, when he netted a staggering 63 goals in all competitions.

That total remains the highest ever achieved by an English player representing a top-flight club—but it may finally be under threat, almost 100 years later.

Kane has already become just the second Englishman ever to score more than 50 goals in a single season for a top-division team, and he now trails Dean’s record by only 10 goals.

At 32, Kane could realistically close that gap over the remaining few weeks of the campaign, regardless of whether Bayern reach the Champions League final.

Under Vincent Kompany, Bayern’s final Bundesliga fixtures look favourable. They face bottom-placed Heidenheim and Wolfsburg in their next two games, before closing the league season at home to FC Koln, currently in 14th place.

Kane will surely see these matches as ideal opportunities to add to his tally, while his form in knockout competitions suggests he could also add to his total in the Champions League and DFB Pokal final, having already scored 19 times across those two tournaments this season.

In a campaign packed with record-breaking feats, surpassing Dean’s legendary mark would arguably be the most extraordinary achievement of all.

Even so, the Everton icon’s record of 60 league goals in a single English top-flight season—set in 1927/28 when he fired the Toffees to the title—will likely remain untouched. Even for Kane, that might be a step too far.
