Manchester United’s confirmed move to bring in Atalanta midfielder Ederson may face a short delay following his late selection for Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad.
Ederson has earned a place in the Brazilian national team after Roma right-back Wesley suffered an injury, prompting a reshuffle in the squad.
The 26-year-old midfielder, who was initially left out of the provisional list, will now join the Selecao in North America. He has previously represented Brazil three times at senior level, though his last appearance came in 2025.
Manchester United have reached an agreement with the Italian club Atalanta for Ederson’s transfer, with an initial fee of £35 million.
The defensive midfielder is expected to become Michael Carrick’s first signing since taking over as full-time manager. Ederson’s acquisition was identified as a priority following Casemiro’s departure from Old Trafford.
The club is looking to conclude the deal soon, but Ederson will only be able to join the team for pre-season training once his World Cup commitments are complete.
Manchester United currently have 12 players representing their countries at the 2026 World Cup, and Ederson’s inclusion would raise that figure to 13, assuming his signing is officially finalised as anticipated.
