Moises Caicedo will now be available for Ecuador’s opening match at the World Cup 2026, following a decision that lifts his suspension ahead of the tournament’s kickoff next month.
The World Cup 2026 begins on Thursday, June 11, with Ecuador set to face Ivory Coast in their Group E opener at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Sunday, June 14. Initially, it was anticipated that the Chelsea midfielder would miss the fixture due to a one-match ban.
Caicedo received a second yellow card during Ecuador’s final qualifier — a 1-0 victory over reigning world champions Argentina in Guayaquil in September — which automatically triggered a one-match suspension, ruling him out of the first game of the finals.
Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi was also sent off in the same encounter and was expected to face the same penalty. However, FIFA has reportedly granted both Ecuador and Argentina their request, allowing Caicedo and Otamendi to feature in their respective teams’ opening games at the World Cup.
“FIFA has granted amnesty and Moises Caicedo is not suspended for the World Cup opener,” reported Ecuadorian journalist Cesar Luis Merlo.
The same decision also applies to Otamendi and Qatar’s Tarek Salman, who was shown a red card late in his nation’s final qualifier against the United Arab Emirates in October.
For Caicedo, this tournament marks his second appearance at the World Cup. Ecuador’s campaign continues after their opener against Ivory Coast, with fixtures against Curacao at Arrowhead Stadium and Germany at MetLife Stadium in the group stage.
Ecuador secured their World Cup qualification by finishing second in the CONMEBOL standings, only behind Argentina, marking their fifth appearance at the global tournament since 2002.
Meanwhile, the newly eligible Otamendi and the world champions Argentina will begin their Group J schedule against Algeria at Arrowhead Stadium on Tuesday, June 16, before facing Austria and Jordan at AT&T Stadium.
FIFA has also moved to address concerns over the high number of yellow and red cards anticipated at World Cup 2026 by introducing an additional amnesty after the group stage. This measure aims to prevent players from missing the semi-finals due to the accumulation of two yellow cards.
With the expansion to 48 participating teams, World Cup 2026 adds an extra round, increasing the potential for bookings. Under the new rule, yellow cards will be cleared after the group stage, requiring players to receive two bookings during the early knockout rounds to be suspended for the semi-finals.
The previously established amnesty after the quarter-finals remains in force, ensuring that no player misses the final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, July 19, because of yellow card accumulation.
